Yellow Aircraft f/a-18 single biuld
Just thought I would share a biuld I am doing. It's a kit I've had lying around for sometime and decided to get stuck into. It's the small Y/A F/A-18 . I had one a couple of years ago with a wren 54 in it and it flew great!! This one will hopefully come out a bit lighter and will have a new jet munts VT 80 fitted to it.. The main reason for a bigger turbine was that I fly mainly off grass and a little more thrust would help alot.. The aircraft will be very simple. Tailerons, nose wheel steering, electronic valve for the retracts and that's it.. I'll post some pics of the biuld asap..

G'DAY Tisdall, looking forward to this. I have an early kit with a wren gold, some video somewhere of the maiden on you tube and a previous thread. I used the same control set up as you other than a standard retract valve. You must be struggling for fuel capacity and I will be interested in where you put the fuel. Best of luck, Ron.

The F/A-18 will have the two Y/A Saddle Tanks 31 ounces + 32 ounce Main tank in front of the intake duct + 6 ounce Header Tank = 69 ounces in total..

I have started to re-inforce the wing spars as i'm using removeable wings. The rudders are both glassed and ready to be glued on. the elevators are quickly becoming ready for glassing to.. I'm told the turbine should be here in a week or two.. The wings were originally going to have flaps but i have deleted them.. I'll post some pics soon.. I have been having trouble uploading them

Rudders are installed and glassed . Elevators are finished and glassed. Just in the process of undercoating the fuselage and filling imperfections.

A bit more progress on the F/A-18. Rudders glassed on and carbon fibre reinforcing done. Turbine arrived last week.

Hey Pete,
I'll be watching with interest!! I have a K-80F and a Wren 54 and would love a scale airframe to put them into!
Where about in BNE do you fly at?
Thanks

Hi Dave.
I fly out at Pine Rivers mainly. The wren 54 is what I had in my 1st F/A-18. It went really well.
Cheers Andrew

Can't believe we haven't crossed paths, or have we??? I am useless with names.... I fly there too!
Mostly larger WW2 but I have the Falcon120 that had the Wren in it and now has the K-80[8D]
Think you can get the -18 in and out of SAAMBR?
Thanks
dave

Yeah mate you know me.. I have the velox with the p60 in it..
Hopefully be able to fly the -18 out of prams.. Should have plenty of power and will be lighter then my old one.

Basically on my old F/A-18 it started to crack around where the gear retracted into the fuselage. So I thought on this one I woul re-inforce the undercarriage ares with carbon cloth..
Pretty much all that is left to do construction wise is the hatches and wings spars.. Getting closer..
Cheers Andy.

Tamjets tail pipe arrived this week. So today I installed two mounting points in the fuselage in which the front of the pipe will be secured to. Now the task of making new turbine mounts will begin.. I also started painting the undercarriage..
I must say the Tamjets tail pipe is a work of art and very easy to install..

Hey Andy,
Looking great Mate!!!
What's your target AUW for the hornet? I have the K-80 and would love for it to go into a scale airframe..... just seems like the market is a little light on for that sized scale model. they are either a little too big to get them off grass with a k-80 or a little too small and the extra weight makes them a bit of a handful.
Missed you guys at the airshow last weekend. Nothing overly new or exciting there. only one jet in the air at a time. no much point really seeing as it was only me and the Glenn with his Mibo A-10.
Thanks
dave

Tail pipe installation has started.. Installed two plywood mounts which will secure the front of the pipe. Also started making the rear supports which will be glued into the exhaust nossels..

Hey,
May I suggest you remove a lot more of the meat from the rear pipe mounts? I have a feeling you're going to have a lot more heat buildup than you need to with that much baffling. I used triangular pieces of 1/4" ply glued lengthwise to the inside of the tailcones. I used a dremel to grind them to center the pipes. Worked great and took less than an hour.
