Default Hamburg Jet Jam roll call

Gents,

Just a few weeks away. We just rolled the field, and it's like
a carpet. Oct 4-7. Looking forward to seeing many of you.
The Dreamworks mobile store will be there. I tried to post pics
of the summer afterburner, and the boys rolling the field, but
rcu didn't like the format. 3Dhelinut will put some up. Check
our website for details. Farviewflyers.net. Blue skies,

The Farview boys

Hey Bob! Missed you at the last Farview party! Don't forget, you guys owe me some popcorn balls!

Ron, I'm glad you're making it up again and making good use of the field. Your flying was superb last weekend!

Mario, have you flown at Farview before? I don't recall meeting you. You are going to love it here!

We are really looking forward to this event and seeing all of our old friends at also meeting some new ones! And OMG, DreamWorks is going to have their new rig here too! Is it as big as Don's???

Hi Mario,

Cool! I get 10 gallons of kero to burn this weekend! I've been burning 5 gallons a day recently!

You're going to love this field. We have a virtually unlimited flyover area in all directions (except behind the flight line!). And we have a kitchen with abundant food and soft beverages. Laid back, but safe flying overseen by a hard working flight line crew.

I know you fly at FBF but there are guys that travel from Delaware and Maryland every weekend to fly at our field.

Thanks Jimmy for the nice words about my flying. I wished we could come up every weekend but once a month will have to do for now. Mario, you will love the place. I joined last weekend so we have a place where if you have a problem you can get it in without worrying about the overfly area.

[8D]Looking forward to serious flying at this event. The Ziroli Panther had been getting in some air time lately. Will have my FJ-1 Fury Fuselage for some of the guys to take a look at. First time making a fiberglass fuselage for a 76" wingspan turbine jet. Need to get working on it for next year.

Hi Ron Stahl,

Took your advice on the two layers of 6 oz glass cloth, looks like I need more. Real thin and will flex real easy along the middle of the fuselage on both sides. I didn't use any Gel Coat so I have a few spots to fix along the side of the hatch opening and the rear of the fuse at the outlet.
Time will tell.........

I just got back from flying on the just rolled field. Got 6 flights today (5 gallons of kero) and all I can say is it's billiard table smooth!

The Hamburg event is going to be fantastic this year! Well, it's always great but the field had never been better and with Dreamworks attending, well, you know! As far as the wife's concerned, nothing costs more than 50 bucks!!!

2 and a half weeks! But as Erik R says, it's bitter sweet. We very much look forward to hosting this event but is also marks the near end, at least for us "fair weather" flyers, of the flying season.

Hey Larry, don't forget about what the formers will add. We'll talk about what you,can do to stiffen the structure but not adding weight. I might be able to give you something to stiffen it up and not add a ton of weight. The thing to understand is most composite structures are driven by stiffness requirements and not strength, adding another layer of glass will not really stiffen it as much a thin core material and then the third layer of light glass to trap it. Carbon placed strategically will do better as well. See you soon.

I will be there for the first time and hope to see all the guys from New England.
Larry I have molding fiberglass models for 20 years and there are many things that have an effect in the stiffness of the lay-up. The first one is epoxy choice the second is cloth orientation, and cloth weight. You say you use 2 layers of 6 oz cloth with a total weight of 12 oz. You would be better using 1 layer of 4oz fallowed by a layer of 10oz. this would give you a stiffer lay-up. You would also need to add carbon fiber in some places to add strength and stiffness. The last thing is you need to use a high end epoxy like Pro-set or MGS and post cure the lay-up. Do not use epoxy like west system or system three because the TG is way to low for our needs and post cure won't change it.

Hi Proline8000,

I will have this fuselage at the Hamburg Jet Rally in Oct. I just laid up another layer of 6 oz today from the hatch opening at the front to the hatch opening at the rear. The rest of the fuse is strong enough, I think. What weight carbon fiber cloth did you use around the nose gear, hatch and the vertical fin? This is the first time I have laid up a fuselage this size and for a turbine of 22 lbs thrust. I have mabe bodies for .40 and .60 glow engines. Thanks for the comback....

Hi proline 8000,

I checked the type of epoxy resin I'm using and it's Fiber Glast 2000. This is what I was told to use by someone that builds RPV's. All the fiberglass bodies I have ever seen have the fiberglass strands going front to rear in the lay-up in the mold. I have never seen any with the strands 45ΒΊ to the mold. Not saying they don't exist. I checked the fuselage about 20 minutes ago and it's a lot stiffer than before. I think I can get away with it like this. There are no formers in this fuselage yet, so I guess when I get them in, it will br a lot stronger.....

I will definitely be there this year We are planning on setting up a demo / instructional booth for jet newcomers as well as interested spectators. On Friday and Saturday I will be going over jet basics with anyone interested, demonstrating some of the basics that maybe some of us jet veterans take for granted, but that may be completely new to other RC pilots .. I am planning on these mini seminars around every 3 hours, and going over actual jet installs and set ups.

We will be covering things like
- turbine operations, plumbing, electrical/radio wiring and hookup.
- Landing gear basics ... pneumatic function, valves, brakes, gear doors , etc
- servo / surface installation, flutter avoidance, etc
- batteries, power buses, etc
- fuel tanks and fuel systems .. air separation, filters, tubing , connectors, parallel/series connections.
- basics of working with composites.
- fueling, charging, maintenance operations.

if anyone has any other suggestions or requests, please let me know

~v~

Wojtek
