Hi Greg,

Thanks. My door isn't connected yet, so the scissor will be in that position until it is, but when I retract the nose strut, it only clears the door opening by 1/4". Do you have any pics directly from the side?

It's been so long since i owned this i do not have any side views of it. I sold it to some one in california about five years ago and have always wondered where it ended up.

Hi,

So I got some work done on the wings today, specifically on the servo pockets. I deviated from the plans/instructions a bit in this area for preference reasons.

The servo mounts are supplied laser-cut ply. These are glued to a 1/16" ply plate. The ply servo cover holds the servo in place and it's a neat little setup. My problem with it is that I really don't care for the huge cutouts for the servo arm. I prefer to have a slot that's as narrow as the thickness of the arm and only as long as the arm travel you want. In this case, I'm going to use the plate intended for the bottom instead for the top so I can make my own slots.

I've got the balsa shims sanded so that all of the servo covers are completely flush.

Thanks, Spence!

Yeah, it's an enjoyable build, that's for sure. There are a few things that are irritating, like the need for 5-40 rod. That's not a common LHS item, so i've got to go to Marshall's. I guess that's better than having 4-40 bend or strip, though....

As I said before, I don't care for the big servo arm slots (even though they're pre-cut which saves time if you don't mind their size), so I flipped the plates and used the pre-cut one for the bottom part of the mount and the un-cut one for the top. I just started with a cut with the thick dremel disc, then took a file to it. I'll further clean that up later.

The mounts are super solid, and the servos (Airtronics digital 94820) are a PERFECT fit for the provided wood. The slot that BVM cuts into the servo mounts is dead perfect, and the height of the servo is absolutely flush with the mounts as-is, so that's a win.

Speaking of servos, I did a test where I mounted a JR 3421 in a wing (that someone else built) on an aileron that has a lot of drag. When I measured the 'double-neutral' on that aileron, it was more than twice that of the Airtronics servo. Less humming, too. Not only is the Airtronics one far stronger, it's also far more precise. Of course, the real test is longevity, but so far, so great.

Hi,

Got some more of the wood glued inside, including the elevator servo mounts.

You're going to LOVE the way it flies Shaun. Mine was a ROCKET with a P-70 in it.. I could have easily dialed down the power and been happy with it too.

Doug

Yep, I remember yours from Miramar. It was definitely a rocket!

Thanks,

The one that i use to own was a bit of a handful on landing, only because i had a P-80 in it and another 32oz of fuel behind the CG. But it was ballistic when you wanted it to be.

Greg how did you get 32 more ounces in it and what fuel lad did you end up with?

Nice shots Shaun thanks for posting.

Matt i had two of the 16oz boat tanks mounted on either side of the tail pipe. This is where you would normally put one 11oz saddle tank.

Interesting seeing how the design has evolved from my earlier version.

Very little is the same.

Thanks for the tip on the Airtronics servo, worth chasing up.

My F 86 is in paint at the moment, can't wait to get it flying again.

John.

Hi,

Glassing time. I bought some 3/4 ounce cloth from the hobby shop, but this stuff seems to be very poor quality. I used it anyway. I used West System cut 60/40 with acetone. Got one side of all surfaces done in 21 minutes. I used the dental floss trick shown in the plans to help keep the live hinge from getting stuck.
