Large SM Hawk questions
I am on the verge of ordering a SM large Hawk and have a few questions for those who have been down this road already..I am planing on the Navy Trainer scheme.
I have read through many of the Hawk threads but thought I would ask the direct questions.
I usually buy the plane with the least done at the factory so that I can inspect/setup things the way I usually do etc...
How have most of you ordered your plane - flaps/ail hinges done? I plan to go with the BV upgrades and metal hinges for the main doors - so I figured I would order it without all of that stuff and do it myself.
I have a 160SX for this - enough?
Lights - who is using what? I have used D4S for other projects but would like a bright nose light and simple install. Is D4S best?
I have never used the Skymaster struts oil/air - do I need anything special to set these up?
Cockpit/pilots - from SM? Seems to be a good deal if bought with the plane?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

BVM manual and trays helped.
I have a 160SX for this - enough? p140rx is fantastic in our 100 degree weather.

I have never used the Skymaster struts oil/air - do I need anything special to set these up? Tools are included with the kit.
Cockpit/pilots - from SM? Seems to be a good deal if bought with the plane? This setup looks great and fits.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
My plane I my had the landing gear and doors installed. I'm using D43 lights and SM cockpit and pilots. You can see them in this video. Also running a 160... More than enough.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
I have 10 flights on mine and it was the sweetest maiden flight that I have ever had. There are a few mods that need to be done. Get with me later and I can give you all the info.
Its funny, I nearly contacted you about a possible trade between my Hawk and your A10 for sale. I figured you were looking for cash only.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
I am in the 9th week of my SM Large Hawk order. Hope to hear somthing soon.
What kind of mods do you think need to be made ?
I am looking forward to it's arrival, but sometimes I wish I had decided on a Tomahawk L-39 after watching many more videos and talking to a few people. But from what I have seen in person with the Hawk, it will be a great flyer. Anyone interested in a Navy Trainer scheme Hawk with everything ?
What size motor are you using ?

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
I am running a 160SX and when I was finished building it, I thought it might not be enough. I was wrong. It flys great with 36lbs of blow. The vertical is great too.... not unlimited but more than I thought for sure.
Some mods are fuse opening edges need reenforcement so they don't crack over time. The belly of the fuse needs some CF so that you don't cruch the bottom sitting it on a stand. I replace the hinges with BVM ones. The gaps on the ail and rudder ends need a little attention. Overall, not bad. It makes for an impressive flyer.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
The website says 36lbs dry but the manual says 38 to 42lbs. I do have the wing tanks and wingtip pylons/missles. If you left that stuff off, you may be around 39lbs dry.
I have flown off pavement and use about 400ft but I could use less if I wanted.
I don't think grass wouldn't be too much different. The wheels are large on the Hawk.
I think with your 32lb turbine, you could fly off of 500ft of grass and be ok. Your ascent may be shallow but the rest of the flight would be comfortable.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
Thanks guys, some good info. I do not have any tanks or missles planned on this new Hawk. I have a JC 180 ordered for my present plane because I think I want to be able to get off the grass easier. The 140 was going to be moved over to the Hawk. But I guess I can decide on which engine to put where after I fly both. I will mainly be flying from grass, and it is alittle on the thick side.

RE: Large SM Hawk questions
I am looking for a servo list to make sure I have everything I need:
Guessing 8711s for aileron(2), flap (2), elev (2) and rudder (1). I plan on using my weatronic so wont use the HV servos.
What size do I need for the nose steering, is it standard size?
thanks!
Dave
