Here's a pic of the newly assembled BVM F-4 tire on the Yellow main rim showing the weight of the assembly less the rim fasteners and paint. I don't have the weight of the stock Yellow foam tire and rim for comparison, but I suspect that the BVM F-4 tire & modified Yellow rim is not much heavier than the stock tire & wheel assembly.

Nice mod Joe! Those tires should be nice and firm vs the foam. Good solution.

I spent some time today upgrading the hardware for our direct steering from 4-40 to 6-32.
I used a 6-32 fully threaded rod, which telescopes into the brass extension tubes on the 6-32 DuBro Monster Links; initially, I had some concern that there might be some binding between the threaded rod and the brass tube, but there is absolutely no binding, thankfully!

There may be a slight reduction to the turning radius from the 4-40 to 6-32 hardware, but there is still plenty for taxi maneuvers etc.

JW, you expressed some concern regarding the potential collision between the nose wheels and the nose wheel opening in the fuselage during the transit phase of the retraction; great observation I hadn't thought about.

It is true that the nose wheels have some limited freedom of movement during the transit phase; we'll need to investigate this further to determine if a fix is necessary.

I'll post some close-up pics after this video to show the relative clearances etc.

Sorry about the grainy video above.
Here are some close-ups of the hardware to show the clearances between the new 6-32 hardware and the Yellow nose retract unit.

Very nice Joe!! Great tire mod and I really like the 6-32 on the steering. I will make the same modification to the 6-32 on the 2 I'm building... Good piece of mind.

As for the tires, Altercare.com is minutes from my office and Peter has a huge selection of tires... Would love to somehow make a set of Behotec wheels work.... Will see if I can come up with something similar before going the BVM F4 route.

Cheers

Trev

Trev, I am sure you have used the Behotec tires before. I have them on my Euro, they are very light. The only thing I don't like is that they flat spot very easy. If you mistakenly hit the brakes too hard, you can come back with square wheels. Just my opinion.

My ideal tire would be something along the lines of the Skymaster wheels. I really like the air filled rubber tire. I have seen them locked up and white smoking on a landing but without any damage to the tire. I looked into it but the mod would require a new rim fit, not just the tire.

Thanks Trev!

Let us know what you come up with regarding the Behotec wheels; JW and I considered retro-fitting the complete wheel & brake assembly, but couldn't find a suitable candidate, although, I'm sure we didn't do an exhaustive search.

We also thought that retro-fitting a tire to the existing Yellow wheel & brake would be the path of least resistance; however, please feel free to prove us wrong; we're always open to better solutions!

Incidentally, we still have to modify the main axles to accommodate the modified main (narrower) rims.

Agreed guys! Sure looks like you guys have an awesome solution there. I was only suggesting Behotec because Altecare.com is so close to me and easy to pop over to Peter's shop and pick his brain. I honestly don't think Behotec has a wide enough tire anyways. I mostly fly off of grass, so haven't had the flat spotting concerns and tend to set-up my brakes on the soft side.

The SM wheels are nice, but I agree... no desire to come up with a new rim and potential brake redesign.

Kudos to you guys for coming up with this solution!! A huge help and cost savings for us watching!!!

I got the main gear doors on and fashioned the way I like. It took some tweaking with the heat gun and a little body filler to get them to sit just right. I have the plastic offset hinges everywhere except the large main doors. I figure they might need some additional strength.

I was adding the air diverters in front of the intakes. The kit supplies stand off ply pieces that make it look way out of scale. I didn't think it looked right and I confirmed it with a pic from my book. I had to nearly trim them in half to make it look appropriate.

First pic is with the plate in the stock position. The 2nd pic is the plate in the modified position. The 3rd pic is my reference picture.

Joe,

How nuts are you gonna go with the wings? Articulating gap seals, etc?

Shaun, I'm interested in that scale detail. Is there a thread(s) that show how it's tackled with the scale hinges that Yellow offer? Thx.

There is a thread out there somewhere that shows the gap seals and how they are done. I just don't have it saved and RCU search is junk.

I don't plan on doing the gap seals. They look nice but I see it as a possible hassle if it catches when retracted. That would be bad in flight.

I may do the offset hinges for the flaps. It depends on the amount of gap it creates.

I think there was someone who did slats.... lots of work!

Begin the fiber glassing....

We are going 1.6oz cloth on the vert fins and elevators, 2oz on the wings and 1oz on the small control surfaces. West systems is the resin of choice.

Joe,
Are the two Yellow F-18 finished? How did they fly and what did you put in them for Turbine?
Any pictures of paint scheme. Interest in building one myself or buying used one. A few kits still out there.

Thanks, Tom
