It is simple, I get a lot of my turbine stuff from Home Depot, one of the first things I got from them was my first FOD, just what you saw at WM.

I cut a + across the top with a Dremel and cutting wheel, used thick CA to hold the treads in place at the cut, shaped it to my needs, slide it in and held it with a turn of electrical type and then a thick O ring, had that one for years.

Whenever I go to the Home Depot I'm always on the look out for stuff I could use on or for my jets.

Here, I found a picture [&:]

Spend hundreds if not thousands on our jets and then put a tea strainer on the front of it, takes all sorts.

Mike,

If your going to criticize the idea at least get it right, these are not wimpy tea strainers, they are industrial sink strainers...big difference...

All kidding aside, they have the same size mesh as any manufacturers supplied fod screens

Ha! We just had one of the "purpose-made" turbine FOD guards shed a section into the blades of our Jet Central Super Eagle this past weekend. Very furstrating to have the $40 screen that you bought specifically to keep stuff out of your turbine actually throw stuff into it! [:@]

Hopefully the repair won't be too expensive... [&o]

Thanks for the great idea! I'm guessing that the sink strainer will be quite adequate as a FOD screen. (Bald Eagle's comment about tea strainers is disregarded).

Just because you spend huge $$$ on jets doesn't mean you have to be stupid when spending your money. I'd rather spend the savings on more kero!

I found some that I like better at the "dollar store"

also if you want the $45.00 one, you can get them at hobbyking for about $6.00. that is all I buy now. they have to come from the same place as JC , tams etc. they look IDENTICAL!!

[link]http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_power_Search.asp[/link]

just check my link and it doesn't take you to the proper page. the link will get you to Hobbyking and then type in "turbine" in the search box, and it will take you to the fod screens

Yeah, after that last event in Oxford where I shot over 4000 rounds though my machine guns I could use some savings to replenish my WTSHTF stash!

I use the same thing. I picked mine up at the local Hardware store. The other thing I do is I pick up that foam rubber sheet at Pat Catans that the kids make shapes from. I Hot glue it to the side that will touch the turbine, then I trim the inside and outside diameters. I also cut the screen around the starter larger then the starter and cut out a piece there and Hot glue it to the screen so I don't get any fod from the screen and the screen doesn't scratch the starter case. After that a Zip tie around the starter case to hold it all in place.

You can see on my K-80 I had to notch the outside for clearance for the fuel festos.

I wish a lot more turbine Mfg's would offer a built in unit on the front cover like the one Wren does. Very neat. I also make some of mine from the sink strainer vintage.

My concern on a home-made screen would be my ability to properly dress the cut-out in the screen for the starter.

Otherwise, this is a great idea! In fact, Shaun of Yellow Aircraft had suggested the Walmart screen to me a couple of years ago. That the turbine manufacturers charge $30-$45 for these screens is ridiculous.

Joe,
I also have the K-80 (in my Elan) and K-140 (for YA F-15C ARF) so am very interested in your FOD screen. We don't have Pat Catan's here in Colorado; can you tell me a little more about the yellow rubber you bought there - thickness, etc. Would its properties be like a rubber inner tube?

Gus
