Default Which brand has the best flight characteristics for a big F-18?

I'm in the market for an F-18 as that has always been my dream jet. I've been told that flying the 18's in RC is one of the most difficult challanges you can come up with. Can you guys on here with the knowledge let me know which F-18 is the easiest to fly and land? If I'm going to be dropping this amount of coin, I want the best chance for survival. I'm leaning towards the Yellow Aircraft twin but lets see what the pro's think. Thanks for the help.

EDFJims F-18 with the P200 was amazing and seemed to land very slow and stable ask him about his. I was told the super hornet is harder to fly than the older version.

Hi,

You can guess what I think... Few people with first-hand experience would disagree

It doesn't get any better than the big twin Yellow F-18. It doesn't HAVE to be set up as a twin, that is just what they call it. Most stable F-18 platform I have ever seen.

The larger the jet, the more stable the platform, provided weight stays proportional. The 1/7th FEJ F-18, set up properly, flies excellently and is available as an ARF. You didn't say whether you preferred a kit or ARF. The only problem with the Yellow is that you have to build it. The flying qualities will then depend greatly on how good a builder you are, or add the extra expense of having it built for you.

If you're going to power with a P-200, I'd give the edge to the FEJ, If you want the ability to use a smaller turbine I'd go with the Yellow F-18.

Both are excellent flying jets. The following is a three year old FEJ F-18, with the original heavier layup, P-200 powered. The newer honeycomb models are lighter with much better performance. Also the overall quality of the kits has improved greatly!

I'm also working on a Yellow F-18 ARF right now, that will probably be powered by a 180 size turbine.

Flew my big CJM yesterday...Mammoth powered and flies great! Worked on it for the last two years in my spare time. 51 pounds wet.

I'll post a video on aseparate build thread later this month.

I'm looking for 1/8th to 1/6th. I really have heard great things about the Yellow F-18 and Shaun has been very helpful. I had considered the FEJ but I have heard such horror stories about their landing gear. Seems the Yellow Aircraft has a really good rep. I haven't heard about the CJM version but it looks like I should look into it. I just don't want to blow this with nasty tip stalling heavy weight beast...

The Yellow Aircraft F-18 hands down. Not hard to fly at all and it is the only F-18 on the market that looks like the real thing.

All of the ARF planes have narrow, skinny landing gear that looks nothing like F-18 gear. I find it so strange that none of the Chinese ARF makers can produce a set of gear with the correct stance or with decent size wheels.

I have had 2. They are a dreamto fly. Had both single and twin engine versions. I think the big single is best

I keep hearing that F-18s are "hard" to fly relatively speaking to other scale jets out there. Any merit to this? Some videos I see online seem to support this on landing.

I've been working on my yellow twin on and off for over a year. It's been a really enjoyable build.
I'm glassing parts as we speak.. and should have the whole plane in primer in the next couple weeks.

Mine was a second generation... but I used the instruction from the older and newest versions. The new instructions are very well laid out for you.

I plan to buy a back up kit I have enjoyed it so much... it's not a hard build but is very time consuming. Getting it all in primer will really get me excited and feel like I've gotten somewhere. I've never been in a rush with it and work on it when I feel like it.

hope to fly it next summer.... I don't know how much time you have. But most of the time with burn out and what not this kit takes a year to build for most. In fact many guys never finish the kit. If you put the word out I'm sure you can find a kit new in the box sitting in someone garage.... that's what I did and I got a great deal from David Searles ( she is getting there David, I'll send pictures when she is all done )

Mine is going to be EDF so I've done all I can to keep it light

It's a great looking plane hope you go for it

Nope.

Hornets fly great.

I've never flown the big yellow 18. But I've flown almost every other one.

When it comes to landing the "C" version is the most forgiving and straight forward to land.

The Super Hornet can sometimes balloon unexpectedly on flare which leads to interesting landings.

So I say yellow as well. Get the single. Less complicated. More fun.

Scale jets are usually heavily wing loaded so that translates into much more important throttle management, especially on landing.

Depending on how "good" you are, if this is your first scale jet, you'll probably be ok if you have mastered your first jet.

Here is my FEJ f-16 TWIN being readied up at the factory:

I go the version without the SLATS and tailhook and no vectory thrust (there is enough crap on the jet already so) It is the honey comb version and is setup to use twin turbines.

I will be using DUAL King Tech 170G turbines to power it for a combined 75 lbs of thrust.

I will let you know how it is when I get it[8D]

Hi,

Unfortunately, the ARF version of our big Bug isn't available anymore, but the kit is not as daunting for a builder as people say. There are a couple of good threads on here (including mine) and if you can build, you can build this plane.

I know a very good builder who will build one of these for you from a kit

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_71...tm.htm#7107273

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-bXn...layer_embedded That's my twin ARF with two P-80SE's on board. You can see from the landing that it's not a hard or heavy landing jet, even in the hands of someone nervous to the point of passing out (because it was literally my first-ever 2.4 flight).

Disco I hope flyeagle has the correct CG now. The big twin Pablo flew at Kentucky Jets had the recmonded CG and it took all Pablo had to land it in one piece it was so tail heavy. Kinda confused how a company can sell something with the wrong CG in the manual but yet flight test it during devolpment of the plane. While I think flyeagle has come a long way they still sometimes miss basic things like the correct CG.

Hey!

This is my highly modified Global/Jet legend version. I was taking it to TG, but never finished the scale details. EVERYTHING is painted and there NO sticker!!
I tried to up load the video on here, but couldn't get it to work. If you go to YouTube, under same s/n of RCFlyerDan- look at 10th flight of F-18 at Ocala.
