Thanks Jeff, since I took the gear apart to paint it, i locktite all the set screws back. But I will double check. I just finished working on the gear and by sanding the edges of the gear cover, I can get about 1.5 degree of toe out which is okay. The only thing happened is that the gear closed fast and cracked the edge of the fuse a little (aahhhh) . Now, I will add a little thin poly ply to the corners and paint it and should be good enough. This plane has taken me a long time and I am ready to be done with it. Thanks again.

Good to see you are getting there Behzad - the clearances for the gear are very tight but it is possible to get it right with plenty of time and patience ! Just adjust little by little until its perfect. Everyones will be slightly different due to the scale leg mouldings and exactly where / how / what angle they are attached to the leg. I did not need to sand any of the skins on the 2 Hawks I have built but it is all a very tight fit. I have ended up with pretty much straight tracking with a very slight toe-in bias.

If anyone needs any pics or measurements other than what I put in the manual please just let me know. Here are some pics of mine - can't wait to get its brother finished and flying, almost done now! The next one will be fully weathered to bring out all the lovely detail.

regards

Colin

Hi Colin, thank you for the note. Your thread made me buy this Hawk and I am glad you are working on the second one. I have to admit that I am more picky than I should be at times and that makes the process longer. But normally don't have to ever touch it again once it is done. the grinding of the corners of the strut covers is minimal and would look fine once caped. (will post pictures later) but it gives good clearance from the wing's skin. another sticky point is the curved spot on the gear (by tire) which sits against the fuse. the gear operates fine but it hits that spot when pulled up. I am playing with shimming the front of the gear mount to just give it enough clearance to not touch. after that, to the gear door and fences and will be final install.
let us have update of your progress.

Hi Guys, for the ones that were talking about the Gear and fitting, after a lot of fiddling around, I decided to grind the corner of the plastic cover on the knuckle and 2MM from the edge of the landing gear where it was hitting the fuse. this would give me 0.5 degree toe out each side and makes everything fit perfect. here are a couple of pictures for reference. One after sanded and one after covered and painted. From the front view, they are hard to see.

Another thing that was hunting me was adding the wing fences as I have seen a few Hawks that were painted in mold (like mine) and their fences looked horrible. so, the way I went about it was to first locate and tack glue the fences in perfect spot with Gel Zap CA which works great. Then, masked about 2mm away from the fences. Removed the fences and sanded the area and about 2mm from the gluing edge of the fences. Spot glued the fences back on and used Aero Poxy to glue them in place. Removed the masking tapes while Aero Poxy is wet and let it dry. Then, re-mask, sand lightly and paint. The result is great and they look like they were there from the first build. The fences are so strong that I can grab one and lift the wing with it. here are some pictures.

Hi Guys, just finished building my CARF Skygate Hawk. I'm running it with a Jetcat 200sx and JR 8711 servos. Everything is well, the only thing that bothers me however is the elevator pushrod mounting. It is only 1 2.5mm bolt holding this huge elevator together. Have any of you modified it to make it sturdier?

You are wasting your time with the small fences, the RAF Hawk T1s (like the Red Arrows ) don't have them ! (or a HUD) but they always DO have a centerline tank !

Hi David

I have looked for a center tank and no one makes one. Do you know of any?

Thanks, Behzad

A good screw with that configuration will handle a lot of force. I think other stuff would break before that so there should not be a problem.

The only center line tank is the Airworld that maybe a bit longer. I was quoted something like 450.00 for one. I have one off of a smaller hawk. I am going to see if looks too small.

As far as the elevator the bolt and mounts are fine. I have checked mine regularly and it has seen close to 7.5Gs and I don't see any issues.

The earlier versions used a long rod from the front. That would have failed long before the bolt. They did have to make sure the rod was bonded together properly.

Default Look at what Santa brought me today!!

My new rudder with the 50th paint scheme...I LOVE IT...

If some would like to do it themselves I have the Tailor-made paint mask new in the box unopened.

I got the rudder and elevator cover from Carf prepainted.

Hi Jeff, thanks for both posts. I love the tail. The tank from Airworld is smaller than what it should be for this Hawk. But, should not be by that much (about 1/3.7 ish scale to 1/4 scale which airworld is). As this is ARF and it is semi scale, it should work fine. I will check it out and post.

Have a a happy holiday to all.

Duc moz thanks for the reply, do you use spacers to make the linkage in line with the servo horns or just let it angle inwards?

i started with a white builders kit, did you notice the airfences were to be mounted with a bit of toe in?

You line them up with marks on the wings. That will set the proper angle.

They are toed in along with the vortex generators.

Has anyone done an opening canopy on this model? can you post instructions on how you did it? I was looking at getting details4scale kit, but that might take longer than I would like to wait so seeing any alternatives would be great.

Hi, there are markings on the wings for the fences. 3 little ones and one wide large one. As for the stab set up, you will be moving the pressure area out if you use spacer and that could weaken the set-up. So it is better to let them be as they are. Please look at post # 412 and picture of my set-up is there.

thanks, Behzad

Finally flew my Skygate hawk, powered by AMT olympus, powerbox cockpit SRS. I gyro. (it was a very long build)
Test flight was uneventful.
Thanks to Marcs for the (virtual manual) here on RCU. The tips on the small outer gear door and canopy were really helpful.
David gladvin for mailing me the Red Arrows color samples and Ralle from Tailor made decals for all the support during painting.

Chatty.

Congrates!!! Looks like it turned out nice. Your paint work looks really good. I though it was a ARF Red Arrow paint like mine. I am sure you will love the way it flies.

Video if possible.
