LARGER S/M HAWK OWNERS....
Large Hawk owners, I'm in the process of building a the large Skymaster hawk and found this. The top mounting surface for the stab bearings are bolted to the top of the fuselage beneath the rear cover. There is plywood below this fuselage mount for the bolts to go through. In mine, I found approximately a 1/8" void between the mounting base and the plywood below. There is no way to properly tighten the stab mounts like this, as it will just crush the fiberglass and leave a mess. It appears SM tried to add 2 washers to the left side on mine to "fix" this. The first pic shows the holes I drilled around the mounting base. To fix the issue, I drilled several holes in the upper fiberglass and pumped thixotropic hysol in the holes to fill the void and give a solid surface to mount the stab bearing mounts to. The second pic shows the epoxy oozing out. I will sand and level the excess epoxy before bolting the stab together. If left stock, the stab will surely loosen in flight. Another way to fix would be to remove a large part of the fiberglass and build the area up with a hardwood block and bolt directly to the hardwood. This would require a bit more trial and error to get the right spacing, but it's another option.

I can't believe they are still coming out of the factory like this
On the early two I built I cut away the fibreglass until I got to the ply and glue large Penny washers down to make a firm bed. I also mounted the servos on carbon and added ply to the inside of the fuz as it seemed Skymaster wanted you to mount the servos on 1mm layup of Fibreglass. There is a full set of build pictures in my Albums on my Facebook page.
Cheers, Alex

Yeah, it's a shame. When Anton will see's this, hopefully he will make the changes needed. I'm still a Skymaster fan, but stuff like this is basic building 101 and should not still be happening after all the planes SM has built over the years.

Dear Sir
Sorry for the trouble and inconvinience. We just double checked the hawks in production and so far hasn't find the space between fiberglass and wood. So,it is supposed to be isolated issue.Of course,we'll have more careful check on similar area in future production run.
Best regards
John

Ryan, thanks for posting this. I'll check my stab before I fly the Hawk again.

This is basically the same issue I have with the stabs on my new G2 F-16.

Sheesh you would think that they would learn for crying out loud.
