I have just completed my winter project which is a little different. It is designed by Andres Chiavarra and has been flown both with Lambert turbine and electric prop. I bought a set of ribs and spars from Andres and enjoyed very much making this different model. The wings have no carbon in them and are spruce and ply construction. There is a full construction article on RCGroups. The covering is 0.6mm ply and Koverall on the open sections. It is very unforgiving as sanding will quickly go through a layer of the ply exposing the glue colour. It is not easy to do and is my first attempt at it. The main spar is made up of multi layers of spruce shaped like a bow. It seems very strong. Like all Horten type wings it has a very subtle shape that has been carefully calculated by Andres.

I am using one of my own Sprite turbines and with a weight of 4 Kg I should have sprightly performance with 3.2 Kg. The wingspan is just over 2 m and it looks larger from the top than the side. I fitted electric retracts and it remains to be seen if they are robust enough. I think we will fly off tarmac first.

Harry
I figure that there will be a limited number of models that I will make so why not make them unusual.
Mick
I keep asking Dave to get his eyes tested...I guess that this might prompt him to do it. The plane should be easy to see if it is in a knife edge but not sure how that would work without a rudder!

RE: Schapel Sa882
On sunday we flew the Schapel for 2 flights on a superb winters day, with a clear blue sky and slight cross wind. Here is some video from the first flight. Dave Wilde was flying as usual, he seems to be getting very used to the flying wing format. This one flies like it is on rails though not as quick as I had expected. I was very pleased with the first 2 flights, the first landed long because of a misunderstanding about the flap control. The second landing was a little abrupt with full flap and we will have to experiment to get it right. Well pleased with the plane, did a loop and rolls on the second flight and all with no rudder.
