Visiting Londrina
Hi guys, this last weekend I had the opportunity to fly with some friends in Londrina, Brazil wich is about 400 km from my hometown. I was invited to participate in Igor´s (igorcar in RCU) birthday and we have a good time there.. posting this because I think that there is some interesting data , wich may be useful for my friends here and also I think I enjoy to write a bit about this things. Anyway here i go in my bad english again.. LOL
As usual I invited my old friends Aramis and Nelson and we managed to squeeze two planes, three guys , luggage and the walking aid in my Citroen.. the hotel was great, and Londrina ( in portuguese means "from London") is a interesting and very new city in Brazil´s farmland, but it has a topography that makes hard to find a suitable place for a r/c club..

RE: Visiting Londrina
The Albatroz r/c club in wich Igor´s birthday party took place was built in a top of a hill, and consequently it has a quite short runway for jet standards, of 300 feet. It would be impossible to improve this because of this hill is made of rock. Local jet flyers are used to it, but I never had flown in such a short runway, but anyway I had luck and managed to fly on it without incidents.

RE: Visiting Londrina
Almost every jet can be flown there, as the runway headings are clear of obstacles.. biggest issue seems to obtain rotating speeds in this lenght when there is no wind or if it is crossed. For example, Igor´s SM Viper XL barely does it with 36 pounds of thrust in this conditions, so a good power to weight ratio seems mandatory. Landing this big bird here is easy, but he asked JC turbines to tweak a extra two pounds of thrust of his Rhino in order to make safer takeoffs.

All jet flyers there use to land at near Vmc , above stall right at the runway headings and then touchdown with the brakes activated. No need to say that tires don´t last long here! Anyway, as the headings are clear, jets can make long approaches, pretty much like in a carrier landing. It´s a challenging but this is a very beautiful and safe place to fly, with good and tall fences, restrooms, picnic area, etc.

Problem was that this particular day the wind was at exactly 90 degrees to the runway, and quite strong but even so I enjoyed the challenge, and was lucky to keep the plane in the runway at landings .. this plane is old, but as an a old friend, I know it very well. :-) Without headwind, tipical takeoff distances for the Hotcat where about 200 feet.

Flying this plane is as relaxed as it could be, as I don´t like nor intent to fly too low or do adrenaline stuff to impress the public, even so I suppose they enjoyed what they watched, and above all , I like how this plane flies, even if it is old and not scale.

This Kangaroo is also very old. It was flown by its owner Luciano, and Otavio , a excellent pilot and profissional jet builder and they made many flights with it. With it´s original AMT cury it needed to be hold at full power and plus a extra push in one of the headings to obtain rotating speed before the 300 feet end. All the flights of it where great.

One interesting new model wich seemed to be Igor´s choice for that day. The JL Viper , has about 1.8 meter span and in my opinion it is very well built. It also has excellent tracking abilities, and slow handling characteristics.. it´s impressive what is offered by a Chinese company this days. This particular airplane was powered by a JC Cheetah (!) and seemed to keep in one piece even if Igor wasn´t too conservative in the throttle management.. very neat and nice plane . Of course, a VIper jet this size isn´t as nimble as the larger ones, but it behaves very well considering it size, IMHO.

It was a pleasure Igor, thanks for inviting us as we and the boys enjoyed the visit . Hope to return there soon.
Achilles: Let us know when would be convenient for you and the club to us to visit.. your club is near S.Jose do Rio Preto isn´t it? Also guess that the next good one will be in Chile, in may (Manecojet), maybe we can also meet there. By the way, soon I will post some info of this event here..
Abração, Enrique

Not jet related at all, but quite interesting too is the HD aerial footage of the FPV flight of that day in the club.. 6000 feet of altitude reached in that flight(!)
very nice place and day, even if the weather wasn´t the best;
