T-38 Jet Rally in Lubbock, TX?
Would like to get some feedback about resurrecting the Jet Rally we've hosted for years here in Lubbock, TX. We've finally recovered from the loss of Reese and have a new field in Abernathy, which is just north of Lubbock a few miles. The city of Abernathy helped us to establish a beautiful RC field at their local airport which is rarely used for full scale. Of course, we'd have a NOTAM for the event closing the airport that weekend. It has covered pit areas and paved taxiways to the main runway. We know the ideal flying months for Lubbock weather are July thru the middle of October and would like your feedback about a date that would not interfere with other fly in's and also, measuring interest in jet fliers around the area who would be interested in coming. We used to have a huge contingent of DFW and Austin guys come up and would love to get this thing going again. Labor Day weekend is our big Warbirds fly in and a few jets make it to that, but we'd like to see if anybody would like a jet's only event (including turboprops and EDF's, of course). We have 10 active jet fliers in the club and would like to rub elbows with other guys around the state!
Thanks for your help and advice in getting this started!

I thinks that's fantastic..I remember hearing about this event back in the day. I would certainly make every effort.
Along with a couple more i can vouch for that would try to make it as well. I think you shouldn't even be asking, if you build it they will come. So build it. ;-)

Close enough for Colorado guys to drive on down.
Nail down a date; July- August? Waco is weekend after Labor Day, Best in the West is typically around 17-20 Oct, Love-Air Jet Rally in Fort Collins, CO usually sometime in August.

Heh, Heh, Heh... I was there for that as well. I know exactly what you are referring to, Kevin. As local club President, I can most assuredly promise you that won't ever happen again. To my knowledge, that individual has been long out of the hobby for some time now.

Sept may not be a good choice for potential Colorado participants. There have been Warbird events in Pueblo and Denver metro the past few years. I haven't heard firm dates for this year. The Love-Air Jet rally has been in either Aug or Sept. the past couple years.
You didn't list the runway size but I assume it is a light plane field.

The runway is 75' x 4,000' lights are well off the paved area. We have paved Tarmac, pit areas and run up areas. Concrete and low fenced pilot stands. The pit area is covered with lots of room, not perfect but lots of room and we're proud of it.

As long as there is not a expletive laced, 45 minute, drunken speech before the Saturday night dinner, I am there.

I don't know what happened earlier as I wasn't there, but it won't be happening again as long as our "prez", Bryan knows about it. We'll try to figure out a weekend and will post another thread when we have an idea. As many of you know, it takes a lot of people to get these things going. We don't want to compete with SW or BITW or Kentucky or FL. We would like to just have a get together where our guys can rub elbows with people around the area and establish networks for reciprocation. Thanks a bunch for your input and will post updates.

Ok, so we are all texting each other back and forth and came up with a POSSIBLE weekend. Let me state first that our number one priority for our club is our Warbirds meet over Labor Day weekend and we don't want to clash (or hurt) other meets in the area.
We aren't sure if we should postpone til next year so it's better planned or just keep it low keyed and try to have this year.
We are considering the last weekend in July (26, 27, and 28th). The only other time not clashing with stuff is the first weekend in October when the winds are the calmest but weather can still throw a curve ball. Somedays, it can be 80 degrees, others 50.
Oh well, we'll figure it out.

First weekend in October gets my vote. The end of July will likely see temps in the 98-103 degree range. We've been washed out in October by a rogue tropical storm but I think that is highly unlikely to occur again in my life time!! Just saying. . . . .
I was there for the drunken diatribe. We won't ever let something like that happen again. Bad apples show up in every barrel from time to time.

For those who have not flown at Abernathy Aerodrome here is a video of Nick Johnson flying his F-16 at the facility.

The runway and pit facilities are superb, and the big sky allows for comfortable flying.
