Great pics Alex! Keep this thread alive!
Roland, you truly are an F-104 enthusiast! Some great models!
I'd love to get the SM one but practically it exceeds my storage and transportation space. []
I really like my Avonds 104. Could you suggest some options that are slightly larger, but not as large as the SM version?
Congrats guys (Roland, Ali, Dustin) for your recent success, there can NEVER be enough star fighters out there, in any size!

Hi,sorry the Krumpp F 104 (Photo German Marine Coulor) was a Little bit bigger as the Avonds, (10 cm longer) Why not the SM you can divide the Fuselage (3 parts - End with Pipe 1m, middle part 2 m, nose 30 cm) rg Roland

Roland, how long does it take you to assemble and disassemble the SM F-104 taking off the wings and separating the fuselage into 3 sections? Is that really practical on every trip to the flying field? I hope to see one in person this summer....will have to bring my tape measure.

Sean, I think you'll only need to take the tail off. You don't need to have anything in the nose, so with the nose and tail off its a manageable model. I built it on the 3rd floor of my house and we got it down the stairs just fine with the tail missing. I have another 104 to build thats booked in so the thread wont die yet...

another pic...

Hi

There's three satellites one just behind the removable nose, one at the front of the intakes and the last near the fuel tanks.

Awesome photos, great looking model guys!

Id like to see one all polished aluminum in USAF markings, 50's style. The German AF schemes look really cool too.

Question: are the wings finished at the tip so you can opt to install the wing tip tanks, missile rails or nothing?

It has a PowerBox Cockpit SRS with an I-gyro so the sats plug into the I gyro then it's Sbus to the powerbox. You can plug them directly into the PB if your not using the gyro. I don't think Ali has even tried the gyro yet, with our forward CG and the modified thrust line it doesn't seem to need one.

Hi Chris

Sorry missed your post.

The tip tanks are removable so you can fly without them. The tip of the wing would require some finishing but it wouldn't take long to get to standard.

HTH

Cheers

Hi guys,

Please watch this video of Dustin flying his F-104. By comparison to my own Avonds F-104 it seem to 'sit' nose high in flight, almost like it is not flying 'on-the-step'. Please can Ali and or Geoff compare Dustin's with their own and let me know if theirs are flying the same way. This attitude may explain what Roland means by the 'boat effect' of the fuselage and why he has been advocating the 2 degree thrust line by adding the 4cm spacer to the engine mount.

Thanks for your comments.

Regards,

Jan

I stood and watched most of Dustin's practice flight yesterday and saw no real difference in the way his plane flew to mine to be honest. Rolling manoeuvres were just as axial and precise. No trim changed noticed with power application and all round it looked to be a locked in flight. Certainly nothing untoward that I could see, which surprised me as I would have thought a thrust angle that different to the one I am flying with would have caused noticeable changes in the flight.

Jan,

I have watched the video myself and I can't say I noticed the nose high attitude you mention. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough?

However, the weather is looking good for the weekend so I am planning on putting plenty of flights on mine. I will see if I can get a mate to video a flight and upload it to youtube so you can see for yourself if the thrustline change eliminates the nose high sit.

EDIT: Forgot Ali is at Top Gun so he can watch Dustins one flying.

Geoff.

Ali and Geoff,

Thanks for the quick replies. What 'concerns' me now, with both of you thinking Dustin's F-104 is flying fine - why then have the 4 cm spacer and sacrifice the bypass - perhaps Morne' is right.

Geoff, look forward to your video. What I am also seeing is the wing walking immediately after a small application of up elevator. On my small F-104 I don't get that - only when I bring the AOA up. That is why I think Dustin's F-104 is 'sitting' while it's flying and perhaps you and Ali don't have that. Of course if one is using a stabilising gyro the wing walking may not be obvious.

Cheers,

Jan

No worries... I am only sat in a hotel room waiting for the rain to stop..
Like with many things to do with this flying game... I dont think there is the " right" set up. However. After watching Dustin's flight yesterday, I know that I would not have any hesitation in flying with that thrust angle set up. If it meant the difference between using a By pass and not then I would actually be inclined to go with the stock position for the turbine if thats what was required to get a bypass in there ( I too like a by passed set up, and on a plane such as the 104 I think it would make a noticeable difference )
Regards Al

Wing walk... Again. Watchings Dustin's in the flesh yesterday, in conditions similar to what I have flown in.. I would say it was no different to what I am used to seeing. We are both now running I gyors and both aircraft look as solid as one and other.
