Yes he is. Instead of putting all of his money in down to earth investments, he gave a lot of it to Burt Rutan.

I applaud these guys in the deepest way. If it weren't for the day dreamers and those with attention deficit disorder enough to just do risky and crazy things we'd all be living in well appointed, carve-art walled hollows or relatively risk-free mud huts today.

The day dreamers inspire the thinkers who inspire the doers and it's a fantastically innovative feedback loop that sometimes leads to disaster and sometimes leads to stunning accomplishment. Old Branson may be an ADD playboy with daddy's money but he is exactly the kind of person humanity needs to keep the spirit of exploration alive in today's environment of too big to fail, too bureaucratic to do anything, and otherwise too wallowed in fear, facebook and greed to notice.

Major thumbs up.

Branson and Birt are both remarkable people. I had the pleasure of working side by side with them on SS1.

Branson was keeping a close eye on the program up to the X prize flights. the rest is history as they say

Great stuff, fantastic work and a great ride. But it aint space really. Space flight altitude is debateable but I think at least one orbit is required IMHO
For that you have to give commercial success to Elon Musk when they put up the man rated Dragon.
Oddly that makes 3 South Africans to fly in space on private funds so far.
Mark Shuttleworth (Soyus ISS)
Mike Mellville ( Space Ship One)
Elon Musk (Dragon)
If only I could....

Yeah that was the first powered flight, not a space flight. It's the test program in progress for a reusable commercial space vehicle but done within the private sector. Space flights come later on in the test program and then the test program leads to commercial operations.
