Well, I did hear at Super Jet South last month that BVM will be selling the PNP/ JL planes bare. No details but apparently there were enough people wanting to use the equipment of their choice for BVM to start offering the option.

I believe I'm largely responsible for that. I contacted BVM about a year ago and requested a quote for a L-39 ARF, and was told that I could order the PNP but the ARF version was not available. When I contacted JL directly they refered me to BVM who told me again that the ARF version was no longer available.

A while back when surfing the web I noticed that the European Jet Legend dealers advertise both PNP and ARF versions. I contacted the UK dealer and asked if he could sell me an L-39 ARF version. He stated that he was not allowed to ship to the US but would contact JL to see if they could help me. A few days later I got a phone call from Rob at BVM about placing an order. I told him my story and he said that he would have to check with China to see if it was OK to sell me an ARF. The end result was that they sent me a quote and I ordered an L-39 ARF.

I can understand that BVM would prefer to sell PNP versions since it's probably more profitable, but it didn't make sense that their policy should be different than JL dealers in the rest of the world. Additionally JL also makes a number of models that BVM doesn't offer as PNP, and were unavailable to US customers. Anyway I'm glad it worked out and now I can use my preferred brand of servos and valves, plumb the fuel system with real Tygon, use Viton in the tanks, and make sure that it's safety wired.

Well only took nearly 6 years but today I took delivery of my arctic camo F16.
First impressions are good, this is my first skymaster product. The bulk of my experience
has been with yellow aircraft, Carf, bvm, and tamjets kits. Everything arrived with no damage
except for the canopy glass but Dirk is already on it and working on a replacement from Skymaster.
Mine will be powered with a cheetah 140 and using Futaba 9156 and Savox 1256TG servos.
I won't do a full build thread, but will unbiasedly document the build on here.

Yea I was debating on a K120 or new Jet central Lynx, but size, weight and fuel burn, are pretty comparable
to the original cheetah 140 I already have. So I will be just be responsible with the throttle.

On another note can anyone that owns or built this plane let me know how their wings look.
The manual show hatches for the aileron servos. My wings did not come like that, Ive got clean
wings with no servo hatches?????

Thank you for the pictures Dan, very nice install.
After I posted I took another look at my wing and assumed I could fit them through the wing root.

my airframe is a gen 1 I think. my previous post said gen 2. the ab cone was out of round,so I made a lite ply bulkhead to correct. the front of the cone would only align properly at one position to fit in the fuselage

Well short of tidying up a few wires/hoses and checking C.G. it’s done. Came in at 27 pounds on the dot with my 6 oz uat full and tanks dry. As I stated earlier this is my first skymaster kit. I’m happy to report over all I’m fairly happy with it.
There were some “annoyances” with the kit, but I can’t remember them all. so it goes to show those items were not a huge issue.
The issues I do recall are as follow:

When installing the stabs I made certain both links were the exact length and the servo arms on the right tooth, for some reason the stabs ended up nearly 3/4” off from each other.
long story short, the stab rods were not “clocked” exactly the same at the factory. So the flat spot on the rod the aluminum horn clamps around were not in the exact same position thus leading to the difference on the stabs. A friend recommended I move 1 tooth on each servo In opposite directions to compensate and maintain the same radius along the servo travel. This worked out great.

The tanks didnt fit very well, they would not slide into the fuselage all the way as intended. After some trimming I was able to make them work but not as intended.
It should be a non issue though, just shorted me out of some space along the turbine rails.

There is no hardwood block to glue the aileron horns into.
just basically the 1/4” or so wide aileron spar. I ended up just packing in excesive amounts of hysol to tie the horn into the surrounding wood and aileron skin. It’s very secure and will not fail but it would be so easy for the factory to just install a small hardwood block.

There were definitely other small things but those are the only big ones I recall, and none of them are by any means showstoppers. Like other people have mentioned they are about 90% of the way to just hitting a home run with this kit, but these little issues hold them back. Considering this kit was almost $4k including shipping to me I think it’s slightly overpriced considering the issues I had to work out.

That being said I’m not unhappy, the fit and finish is quite nice, the gear functions well and seems quite sturdy, the construction was clean and neat, no upside down decals on mine, and the size is ideal.

A lot of people seem to be on the fence with this jet, I can honestly say if you are ok with these issue then go for it. Once the airplane is flying, and I’m sure it will fly great, these issues will be long forgotten about, and you should be left with a great flying reliable jet.
Not sure when I will get around to the maiden, I’m sure it will be a non event though.

lol she’s 12 years old, the only things that impress her is food and sleep. She barely moved from that spot when I fired the engine up. 😂
