Default Jet Central Rabbit 100 (Mint) trade for a Jet Munts VT-80?

Needing more power? I know this is truly a shot in the dark...but is anyone interested in trading over a Jetsmunt VT-80 in exchange for a pristine five flight new Jet Central Rabbit 100? I just don't need 23 pounds of thrust in a 17 pound jet. The VT-80 would be a much better fit for my tiny aircraft. The Rabbit literally has five flights on it. If I can't find a trade then I will list it in the classified but that won't happen till later. If I do list it it will be for 2k so let me know if you are interested.

Email me at [email protected] or PM me here. Thanks guys!

Tam 1/8 F16? Have you flown it with the rabbit yet? Any external stores (drop tanks/missiles)? I have a P-100 in mine, but have heard great things about the VT80. Seems like it would be an awesome combo

I would say keep the rabbit you can always throttle back and in the future if you need more power you will have it. Also wont you be
taking about a $600.00 loss?

That doesn't make much sense. Both engines weigh about the same so there's no advantage to making the swap versus dialing down the Rabbit. Just look at the power curve and limit the max rpm to give you 17 -18 pounds thrust. You can always increase the thrust later if you want for this or another application.

Leave that Rabbit in there, you are not even close to being overpowered on that airframe. It will fly super nice. No nee to dial down either. It will have excellent short takeoff performance.

It's not just the power but also the fuel economy. The tanks in this bird are not very big. Looks like I've got something sorted guys. Thanks.

A rabbit turned down to 17 pounds is quite efficient

Fuel consumption is directly proportional to thrust. A 22# engine dialed down to 17# has the same fuel consumption as a 17# engine of the same efficiency.

Default RE: Jet Central Rabbit 100 (Mint) trade for a Jet Munts VT-80?

Yes but overall the VT80 according to tests is more effecient than the Rabbit is it not? Which works better for my small gas tanks.

VT80 at max thrust is 258cc per minute
Rabbit at max thrust is 389cc per minute

Now I realize those numbers are at full throttle at thier rated thrusts. So if I dial the Rabbit back to 18 pounds, I wonder how I tell what the cc rate would be and what it would compare to the VT-80. The P-60SE for example has a higher CC rate per minute yet only puts out 12 pounds of thrust.

My main goal is 17-18 pounds of thrust and as little fuel consumed as possible. Are you guys saying that if I dial back the Rabbit, that the difference between the VT-80 and the Rabbit in terms of fuel consumption just isn't all that much? Please fill me in.

Keep the Rabbit, but hey if you want to trade I have a 19Lb thrust Rabbit with zero time after its first 25 hour maintenance interval I'll trade straight up

Remember the left stick controls your thrust

I get that. But please answer one thing for me. If a turbine has less consumption at full throttle compared to another brand...does that also mean that it would have less consumption say at idle? It's not all about being in the air. Yes taxi tanks can help but I'm thinking if I'm flying around etc and doing basic loops rolls or even just coasting along, that a turbine that uses less fuel right off the hop would also give me longer flight time overall.

The question is...is the VT-80 better on gas overall than the Rabbit 100. Regardless if the 100 is dialed down. Hopefully someone can answer this...

Pound for pound of thrust, the are very close. By reducing the max RPM in the run menue to the rpm/desired thrust (look at supplied chart) the turbine (Rabbit 100) will run cooler and use less fuel. The Rabbit 100 is one of the most efficient turbines in it's class. RCJI did a glowing report in one of the past issues. BUT. . . .one questions prevails over all others; Why give up the Lifetime Warranty ? ? ?

As others have said, reduce the thrust and enjoy the turbine.

Regards,
Eric

Maybe this will help. I have the Tams 1/8 scale F16 with a Rabbit that was converted to Kero start. Not sure if that makes any more power or not but lets just say it is 19 lbs of thrust. I don't have it dialed down but almost never need full throttle and when I do it is just for take off and maybe a climb or two. On a 6 minute flight I might burn through the two saddle tanks but that is it. On my last flight I landed at about 7 minutes and turned the turbine off at 9 minutes and still had over half of the center tank left. The Rabbit is very efficient. I'm not sure you could do any better with the 80.

Most current turbines are made to be there most efficient at the upper scale of there rpm , just dialing down the rpm will not decrease the fuel consumption as dramatically as most think yes it decreases fuel consumption but not as much as most would think. Glenn keep the 100 and buy a vt80 for the 16 you will find a home for the 100.

Keep it, dial down the output and then measure the consumption by measuring a specified amount of fuel and whack the engine on your desired output of around 19lbs.
Basically set up a 2L cola bottle as your main tank, mark a black line on the bottle at the moment you whack it to your full throttle that you desire and measure for one minute. Mark it off at the moment you back off back to idle. Then do the math by using a measure cup to determine what the fuel consumption is.

This is clearly one of those situations where in a year's time you may think 'Why the heck did I sell the Rabbit?'

The tanks in this bird are not very big
And what do the full size do?

More fuel, right on the CG, looks cool.

I think BVM makes one. - John.

There is one for sale on RCU right now, made by Details 4 scale. I have one an it is of very high quality.

However, do keep in mind that in the TAMs F-16 you can fit an aditional two 8-10 oz tanks above the inlet behind the cockpit. This is where I installed my smoke tanks. It takes the extra fuel weight very well.

Is this true!?

I always thought they were the least efficient at full throttle...

Eric? Barry?, Bob?, Gaspar?, Oli?, Anyone?

Not exactly true. While turbines are less efficient at low rpm the efficiency doesn't change much between mid and max rpm. Take a look at the sfc vs. thrust curves that are typically published in the RCJI engine reviews. We are talking about lowering the max rpm by 10 K or 20K at most. The efficiency curve is pretty flat in that rpm range and fuel consumption is directly proportional to thrust.

The bottom line is that he would not be able to tell the difference in fuel comsumption between a VT80 and a Rabbit dialed down to the same maximum thrust.

Joe

Just to give you an idea of what it looks like, this is my Tamjets 1/8 F-16 with D4S cl tank taped to the bottom. I still need to complete my install.

My old squadron! I really miss those Block 15's doing counterdrug ops in the Caribbean. We need to fly formation some day.
