If you get a chance to load it on You tube I'm always interested in watching flights back. Wasn't the easiest flights flying with up to 5 others!

Ken Biggest is the P-100Rx as in mine. Biggest case is 100mm dia With the Jetcat I screw the lower mount to the wood spacer blocks and then install the assy before screwing down the wooden blocks with a ball end driver. Then drop turbine on and add top strap loop

Hi Dave

Always a pleasure to follow your building blogs. I have been involved with ducted fans since '81 and entered the kero race in '97. So, have been around the block a few times but I will say in all confidence to fellow jetsters that "when Dave Wilshire speaks, you better listen." You are truly an asset to the British jet community and appreciated across the pond.

Let me clarify that the Kingtech 100G and possibly other makes have a bit high idle thrust ( the bird rolls on pavement on idle thrust alone ). It is also on the larger side for this airframe. A P60 size turbine is more than adequate for the Xcalibur. The use of crow on the Xcalibur IS NOT NECESSARY however, it helps with the higher idle thrust engines. I noted that at the beginning of the day the temperature was 9C by mid afternoon it had climbed to 26C and the thrust had diminished where I needed a little more power to smooth out the landing approach to touch down. Absolutely, no issues with the airframe - it performs very well. As for the CG - agreed - the range of 160 - 170 mm is correct. It is fun to throw around, yet safe for the novice. In the hands of a more experienced pilot it really tumbles nicely!

Enjoying the Xcalibur!

Dean

We are very lucky in the UK, small island but lots of great modellers.
You are right that often on RCU crucial information is often missed, weight of models varies even with ARTF models, achieving balance with weight added in non optimum positions (too far back) adds weight for nothing. I'd say most people do use CROW, it certainly does not hurt.
We don't see many KingTech turbines here, Ali had a KT60G in his own Xcalibur, but I've not seen a 100 run. Idle thrust, air temp and density all affects the set up and handling!

Its a great model, all we need to say. After the weekend flying I had three more orders carded from people who were impressed with its performance

Hello Dean,
you stated that Kingtech 100 and possibly other brands have a little high ideal thrust and make the jet roll at idle.
Is this because the turbine you are putting in is to large for the airframe or is because in comparison to other brands they actually do have a higher ideal thrust.
I mean if I put a 200 size turbine in a 140 size frame it to will roll unless I apply brakes when idle.
Can you please show us some comparison tests done with different brand turbines but of equal size for all to see. This would also be valuable information along with max diameter size as Dave has mentioned.

The P-100 does not roll. you can see in the video! Even needs pushing out of a hole!
Turbines do vary on residual thrust (in the same groups) Look at the RCJi tests

Guys, had a local jet meet last weekend and managed to get another couple of flights in. The more I fly it, the more I love this jet! I'm using a PST800R and this is a perfect size engine for this airframe. I think that anything over a 100 size would be too much for it. Ken, alot of interest from the guys attending Jet Action, so I suspect you may be receiving a few more orders soon!

My rolls on hard surface at idle to the point where it is actually annoying, Wren SS turbine. I didnt use the stock gear but my wheels, from HobbyKing, look to be the exact same main wheels sold in the gear package for this airframe. I have never had a model roll this easily, I ask another jet bud of mine to push it along the ground and he couldnt believe it. Im thinking about trying to tighten the nose wheel up a bit so that I dont have to ride the brakes so much. It will come in handy however for grass takeoffs.

If you don't have brakes to apply, try putting a bit of fuel tubing on either side of the wheel to provide some friction without causing a lot of drag on landing or the take off roll.

Seems like its idles about 45,000. The turbine is new to me but I think thats what i remember. I will note it next time and see.

I was under the impression that you cannot adjust the idle thrust but, the maximum thrust can be adjusted.
Is this a fair assumption or have I got it wrong.

I get about the same time from mine if I fly a full tank. The stock 2.9ltr tank I fly 10 minutes and land with at least 1/3rd of a tank. The Xcalibur is very clean and holds energy power off.

Talking about idle thrust. At idle my Merlin VT80 powered Xcalibur will taxi on idle. I reduced the idle thrust from 45,000 to 43,000 rpm which helped. There is no noticeable increased delay in throttle response.

Aussie,
Thanks!, The video is a combo of two flights, I normally fly a full seven minites starting my timer when I start my take off and do a gear check at the seven minute mark when the timer expires. I land with enough fuel that I can easily make another couple of mid throttle go arounds. This is at my local flying fields and I don't use an overflow tank. At a Jet meet I will use the over flow tank, start my timer when I pull onto the taxi way, take off and fly till the timer hits the seven minute mark, do the gear check and land, leaving me perhaps 30% of my tank left on shut down. That's more than i have when flying locally but do to the possibilities of other jets or my self having landing issues, I want a couple more minutes of loitering time if necessary.

Take care,
mike

Aussie,
The air tanks are in the formers each side the front wheel well. Iuse a medium "Cat" header tank and it is mounted in the nose, along with 2 x 3800 LIFEs and the ECU battery. My ECU battery gives up long before RX batteries do which i think is a good thing. I don't crash as often when the engine won't start!

This plane is a hoot to fly with the Rabbit in it. Great verticals and large maneuvers, doesn't do anything silly close to the ground at part throttle. i do have a 2% elevator to throttle mix to mix in just a tad of down elevator with increased throttle past 50%

the kingtech K100G has the idle set at 43000 don't decrease it. my xcalider does roll a little bit at idle but only on
hard stand and that depends on how smooth the surface is and using brakes will stop that. on grass never going
to move at idle. have had no problems with residual thrust on landing and have not used crow either as yet. will try it
one day. I am using electric retracts and electric brakes that I sell. new shipment of the british scheme xcaliburs on
their way to oz. if your in oz will take orders now

Last weekend I was in Aberdeen (Scotland) for their Helicopter Nationals, while there I test flew various new models including another Xcalibur for the club (took mine and had a blast too) This one built by Paul B has a JetCat P-60SE and all JR equipement. Like all of Paul's models it performed faultlessly and he then enjoyed some coaching flights. Pics are a bit dark as it was early morning...you get 18 hours daylight at this time of year!

The RAF scheme batch arrives in England this week, perfect timing as we have a big show this coming weekend.

I had the privilege of flying StewartG's Xcalibur 3 times on Sunday. Never been a fan of boomer style models but really enjoyed it. Main observation was that you really need the airbrake for landing. The damn thing keeps gliding without it, forgot what switch I put it on my DX18. And it's really wild at tumbles at the top of a high speed climb and flat spins on the way down. Wren Supersport was a perfect pusher.

Stew had the largest Xicoy AB light on his...as on my Euro makes for a great visual effect on high G turns...apparently you need one Dave

Dave,
The RCJI tests give idle thrust, but the Performance Comparison table does not (maybe another column could be added). How does the Kingtech K-60 idle thrust of 4.0 N compare with other similar engines?
