I worked with the unmanned program many years ago. Flew safety chase for. F102.and F100 drones it was a blast. Flying formation with an airplane without a pilot. Watched them get shot down and blown up from up close.

Tom,

That's pretty cool! I wonder why they always refer to rolls as 'barrel' rolls?

I thought barrel rolls was the roll where you add elevator and rudder and make it cylindrical shape, very open. And then axial roll was the normal one, which is rarely ever axial.

A barrel roll is what Walter White did with $11E6.

They can be flown either manned or unmanned with the flip of a switch. Sometimes a guy will ride along for profile testing while the computer or ground controller does its thing. When certain limits are exceeded then the jet becomes drone only. They carry self destruct packages to allow the drone to be destroyed if necessary. I saw one (F102) get zapped from about 2500' line abreast once. Took an Aim- 9 in the tailpipe and was unrecoverable. Had one escort me home once after I had attitude indicator failure above the weather. Real neat to fly formation with an empty hole. I flew the first F-100 safety chase mission at Tyndall, F102 was more stable and easier for the drone guys to fly. In my days the drone was visually launched and recovered. One guy flew elevator and throttle another flew rudder aileron.

Was it controlled by a Futaba or JR radio?

Did either of those two pilots on the ground have a turbine waiver?
Did either of them at least have an AMA membership?
Did they have a waiver for the weight limitation of 55 lb.?

Did a CD inspect that F-16 to make sure it was airworthy?

Mach 1.47? That broke the 200 mph limit set for an R/C plane.
Call the AMA police !!!

What will the AMA say?
