I think we need to prove this 80 hr build on the Hun, so I will offer my Hun for this test so that all the world can see if its possible. What do you think Greg, maybe it can become a reality show, "Hun dynasty"

Hey Rav,
how about having it metal plated ?? nothing beats actual real aluminum .. ( not pita tape or imitation paint .. )

Joe C had a f-100 that was metal plated. An f-86 was flown in the WJM that was done with our same process. here's some pics .. Also, some pics of my UF tail cone as an example, and some of my P-47 ..

also, its durable, and easily repairable if needed

Voy, how hard is it to put on? And how much is it?!

I have a sinking suspicion that it is a PITA! LOL

There is, serendipitously, already a balsa block in the flap to glue the control horn onto!

And this is the reason why we buy BVM jets. Look at those Bee-YOU-tee-ful glue joints.

Well, I guess i have to re-rerference the "pita" statement ... lol,

its not a pain with it peeling, denting, and marking up with as little as a fingernail when done. also it allows for scale detail like real screws, etc, and also does not get that nasty orange peel look ..

It is a proprietary process performed as part of the Metalmorphous service, and is not something that can be done yourself. It costs about twice what a good paint job costs, maybe even less depending on what kind of paint job its compared to. What is a pita is that the process has to be done at Metalmorph facilities in Connecticut , so any jet has to be crated / shipped.

If you wanted to see in person how the results look, you can always just get a small part plated, like the aft tail cone, or similar .. fuel probe , etc .. Also, for different coloring, ( like different metals on aft sections ) , the alloys can be mixed to show varied colors.

nice progress with the F-100 by the way .. Its been on my list for a while , but i opted for a 1:4 scale turbine heli for my current project .. , so maybe next

atb,

that's actually me in the video ... Its a fine scratch/shine polish product. Its actually meant for plastics, but for finish up i like it on the aluminum as well. In the video I used steel wool .. on the aircraft, we go at it with an orbital polisher .. just have to keep speed down, because its easy to forget there is fiberglass underneath that can heat up and deform, lol .. there are some really cool techniques we have to work with the metal .. like varying grades of scuffing it, for the look of used/worn panels , etc ...

all best ,

Voy

Thanks for the kind word Voy!

I think metal morphing will be out of my flying budget. I'm setting aside somewhere in the neighborhood of $2-3K for paint.

Hey Rav, if thats your budget, dont rule out the plating yet if you want a metal finish

As an example a 110" CARF P47 retails for $4100 to metal plate and polish. Few hundred more for lettering and stars and bars painted. The f100 is lots smaller , especially in surface area. You do still have ship costs however. Not far off from your budgeted paint $# though ... hey, its at least an option ...

Keep it up on the build. Its not too bad to get it to flying state from what I have seen, detail and finish will be where the time is. Heres a pic of my current project. Going all out scale in it. Not a jet, but it is jet powered

Exactly…

No requirement to remove skins for inspection.
No requirement for endoscopes.
No requirement for the manufacturer to provide photos of the layup.
No honey comb, or any other material used inappropriately.
No excess epoxy glue smeared all over the place.
Just a well designed, well built structure.

Your flap mod looks good. I might consider it on mine yet. I have finished the wings, but this mod could be done any time..

Thanks for sharing your build..

Rog

Voy, that little girl is turbine powered?!

LOL!

That looks like a fun project. I'll keep the plating in mind.

I have working slats now!!

The movement is perfect with the servos installed. No binding, just really smooth working slat action.

Rav, with the amount of energy this little girl has, i would have to guess it a very likely possibility! lol

No I did not so far. I have not seen my saber want to separate on a hard landing and I have made a few before I added crow. Dan

Dan, I PM'd you and would you post some pics on that mod you guys did please?

More building in. You have to cut out the slots for the landing gear. The third rear mounting bolt has to be drilled and tapped.

Next, you have to build the landing gear covering plates and leg gear door.

BVM parts fit is impeccable. There is even a little notch for the carbon fiber wire strut holder that connects to the main gear.

Next, you glue some plywood support, drill holes and mount the plate on the wings.

I hope so Bob, I hope so. LOL !

Dantley was telling me that he had a couple of belly landings on his F-100 as the main gear got stuck on him.

I was curious as BVM gear is one of the most reliable gear I've ever had the pleasure of having.

After seeing the geometry and how close some of the fit is on these landing gear covering plates is, I can see that a small distortion in the right place could hang up the gear.

I made sure to make the main gear door and the cover had plenty of room in between so that air pressure at flying speeds don't spoil the mechanism.

I also felt better about making a notch on the bottom of the gear door to make sure it could clear the wheel for the same reason.

You can see how close and tight fitting these parts are.

Right?! LOL!

And yes, you have to build the rudder from, basically, a box of sticks! YAY!
