Brian, thanks.

When you get the new parts can you let us know if they are different in some way. I would like to try and replace mine before flying if there is a new updated or better part available instead of waiting for it to break.

When was your kit delivered? Mine was last July.

Thanks
Gary

Gary mine was from December or Janurary. I saw the link Craig posted from McMaster and see now that it's the ball joint that fails not the Cylinder.. John just reached out and is sending me new parts and I went ahead and ordered the McMaster Parts as well and will compare them..

Brian

Does the ball link threaded shaft screw into the cylinder shaft at the end? I could not tell from the photos posted.

I will have to go look at my main gear cylinders in the shop tomorrow to see how the ball link fits into the cylinder. I may also go ahead and order the McM replacement parts also.

Thanks
Gary

Your jet looks great. I flew WA jets back at Nellis AFB in the early '80s but they were all grey.

Good luck,
Gary

I removed my landing gear from the fuse for assembly and inside painting so it was easy to inspect the cylinder and ball link.

The ball link screws into the cylinder shaft. Mine were threaded all the way in with the jam nut snug against the ball link.
It looks like the threads have been cut off with a rotary tool to make the threaded shaft short enough not to bottom out in the cylinder shaft hole. I loosened the jam nut for the photo to better show the fit. From the posted photos it seems like the break can occur above and below the jam nut in the threaded shaft section.

I also noticed it looks like the same threaded ball link is screwed into the other end of the cylinder. I don't know if it goes into the air chamber or not but I did not remove it because I did not want to mess with seal in case it went into the pressure chamber.

I there have been enough breaks reported that I think I will order some spare ball links from the McMaster link Craig posted. McMaster page above. Cost says $7.50 each. Could save the day while at a jet meet some day.

Hope this helps,
Gary

Has anyone found a good way to bleed the air out of the hydronic steering? Mine is not centering well at all... I see tons of air in the lines.. I purchased some power steering fluid and gave it a try but still is not centering well and I feel play in the cylinder. I know with the forward take that it will center itself a bit but want it done right..

Hi Brian,

I spoke to Craig while at Joe Nall about exactly this.

His suggestion was to remove the two cylinders from the gear and aircraft. Fill a small tray with fluid, remove one of the lines, submerge the whole system in the fluid and work the cylinder back and forth to purge air from one side of the system. Then reconnect the line and repeat with the other side. I have not tried it yet. He said there were some instructions posted some where but I could never find any.

My Nose Gear didn't have air...solid fluid BUT it wasn't really centering every time when on the bench, as I moved it left and right. Craig South, whom assembled and flew the first one stateside (I believe), said not to be concerned. His tracked well when rolling and with the aircrafts weight on it. He was correct. Mine has worked flawless as far as centering and steering authority.

Is there is anybody flying the SM 1/5 scale F-16 with the empty CG aft of 280mm. I read somewhere about 290-305mm aft of the wing leading edge

Is there anybody doing that and if so how does it handle.

Thanks
Gary

Gary

Mine is at 280mm, is great...i think 305mm is to much.. but to get there will need a lot of weight in the back.
mine with p300, 2 lipo 3300 in front of cockipit, 5000 turbine battery in front of turbine, 1800 lipo inside the fin (light), i still have to add more than 0,5 lbs in the tail to reach 280mm.

what is your CG?

Heraldo,

Mine measured 282mm planning for my re-install. If you saw my post on the build thread my first install resulted in 240mm. I elected to move several items back and came up with 282mm for the new layout. I am just now finishing the install again and will check it when I get it all back together.

My target will be between 280-290mm.

Did you ever get your nose door to stay shut? If so how did you do it.

Thanks
Gary

About CG.. i think something between 280 and 290mm will be perfect.

Here is my F16 with the weathering done ( APWpaint.com ) ... This one will be set up with a cranked up P200. I am going all out 3D scaling and lighting the cockpit up also with full MFDs and LED lighting

I hope to have this ready for the spring.

Sorry guys a little off thread topic.

Heraldo what onboard camera were you using on your F16 when you had the flame out? The picture looks to be great quality. Here's a link to some footage onboard my 1/6 SM F16 and a mates L39.

https://youtu.be/2A40zrOlJO8

The picture doesn't seem as clear as yours though.

Cheers

Anton, I have a F-16 1/5th with your lighting system. The instructions are in Chinese. Do you have any thing in English or a youtube?
