Default Jet Fuel smell removal?

Ok maybe someone here can help me. I spilled a bunch of fuel inside my Chevy Suburban rear carpet. The smell is just horrific. Does Anyone know if there's a way to clean and remove the jet fuel smell from that carpet? The Chevrolet dealer wants $550 for a replacement carpet(not installed)which maybe my last resort.

For fumes (Not the big spills) you can toss a couple of "Bounce" Dryer sheets in the infected areas.

A typical Shop, or Wet-Dry vac could be dangerous. The motor is inside the bucket section. (making sparks) Add some fuel fumes, and a lot of air... and BOOM !

I would use paper towels to soak it up... then spray K2R on it. (It will draw out the rest) Then... hit it with a fabric sheet, or some Febreeze. AND.... lift the carpet, and dry under it. There could be "Wet" fuel under the carpet.

Take to a place that does car detailing. They can shampoo that area. That may work

Once you get the smell out. Order a Weathertech liner for the rear section of the Burb. That will contain spills unless you decide to dump 5 gal of fuel

I'd do as Bob-o says and take it to a detail shop, but make sure they pull the carpet out and clean it from both sides, and wash/wipe down the substrate underneath. you may have some sound insulation material in there that would need to be cleaned as well. then plus one on the weather tech.. there used to be a company called "Bedrug" that had a carpeted version of a mat that would hold a few gallons that was pretty nice too.... or do a danno and replace it with green shag... that'd rock

Sell the car! I found that it took ages to get rid of a smell from a small leak, at least I thought it had gone but my son who has inherited the car has complained about the smell. If you use Jet A1 it is much worse than normal low odour Paraffin. New carpets sounds like a good way to go if you cannot stand the smell. Using sprays I found just masked the smell rather than eliminated it.

check with your insurance they may cover it under comprehensive. Take out the carpet and power wash it at the local carwash or rent a rug cleaner, and get new soundproofing/padding as there is no getting it clean. I spilled kero in my mini van and never did get all the smell out.

Is it jet fuel or kero? Jet fuel odor is very difficult to get out.
You will have to use a steamer vac and when it gets hot out months afterwards it will still smell a tiny bit.

Bad thing about jet fuel is that it takes months till it goes away.

Hey Pablo, I found that this works the best....

Your good friend Rich

Actually like other suggested you need to pull the carpet out, I'm not sure if your Suburban has a pad underneath it, if it does it is definitely toast if saturated and will need to be tossed.

You may be able to save the carpet by pressure washing it after removal.

Ask me how I know!

Had it happen to me about a year ago in one of our smaller SUVs. after A LOT ! of cleaning with everything i could possibly use for carpet cleaning, we placed a few open dishes with dry coffee to get the smell out. worked out great. also leave the doors and windows down with a blower circulating some fresh air when possible, helps a lot.
Good Luck!

Kenric.

As a retired jet engine mech. (37+ yrs) you can't get rid of the smell completely. Replace the carpet. My wife claimed she could still Jet-A six months after I retired.

Pablo.

A magi solution for a penny on a dollar: buy a large bottle of Windex and spread on the affected area. You will be amazed.

It has to work, otherwise it would not have been in the movies...

Let Michael Abraira drive it for a week. It wont smell like Kero after that, but on second thought it might smell worse!

Remove the carpet, take it to a laundramat that has the oversized washing machines. Wash it at least twice using strong detergent and add some Pinesol the second time. Let it completely dry out before reinstalling. While the carpet is out clean the area with a strong detergent.

First thing to do with any liquid spill on carpet is to BLOT it up using clean white cloth or paper towels (colored ones can transfer the dyes and change the carpet color). Do not rub, rubbing will just spread the mess, just blot with pressure until there is no more transfer to the towel.

You can get the materials locally. search on http://www.hostdry.com/in-your-home/retail-dealer-locator

Go to this guide;
http://www.hostdry.com/in-your-home/spot-spill-guide-2
Use method A then B then A again.

When you do the method B, pack the Host Dry Carpet Cleaner on at least a half inch thick and let dry, it may take a couple of days to dry completely. as it dries it will draw the remaining Kero residue out of the carpet.

This will clean up the spill. By now the odor has penetrated everything.
Get some "Odor Exploder" and mix per instructions on the bottle. You can use a mister to spray over all carpet and upholstered surfaces that have absorbed odor. Use this on the spill area just before the final cleaning using method A above.

Yes I am a certified carpet care specialist.

As someone mentioned earlier cat litter does the trick, just chuck it on the damp area, leave a few days and it will go away!
Don't ask how I know!

Well I stripped the interior out and pulled out the carpet and padding. I power washed them with every detergent I could find at home. I hope it works. Smell like flowers mixed with laundry detergent lol.
