Classic "winter" Jets 30th Dec 2013
Tomorrow is CJ's Winter Jets, I for one expect to be flying after the initial inclement weather (while we are in Mcy'Ds having pre breakfast.) The Guys will too.
Introducing the youngest Wilshere to Jets tomorrow...look out, it could be worse than the weather
Just added a Spark EDF to the van after BH today, needed the room for deliveries.
So GJC Mig 15, Ripmax Xcalibur, Ripmax Hunter and the 11s Spark.
See you all around 9am

Only managed to catch Jamie's ICDF Viggen in the air. It was started by committee, had a small problem taxying in the strong wind (which dis-located the top of the fin) and then shed the rear of the pipe, but it looked good in th air!

Against all the odds and overcoming the odd challenge (like several 60mhp gusts), we got the marquee up, kept the tea and sweeties flowing all day, cooked off half hundred weight of ordinary and smoked slices of pig and served 96 hot dogs at lunchtime! Added to that, several of the guys braved the elements to fly - the Ginge showed us how to cheat death with his Bobcat and Jamie kept the D/F tradition alive with a very spirited flight of his Viggen (someone clocked the wind at 52mph during his flight...the boy has the skill !). I heard DW with an electric jet and CG blitzed his Boomer around a few times!
As expected, the wind died away and the sun shone through in the later afternoon - I was surprised at how many guys stayed right to the end, I suppose part of the attraction is getting out of the house after a few days cooped up over Xmas! As ever, the day ended with a dozen of us gracing the local watering hole and, when I left at seven, things were nicely getting out of hand!
I've just finished the big clean-up and storage/rubbish tip runs and everything's put back to bed! So, CJ's are done for the 14th year...more to come next year but, in the meantime, a massive thank-you to everybody who came and made yesterday work, and to everybody else who've helped over the last year, including the Captain, who was a tad under the weather yesterday and couldn't make it...you were missed mate!
See you all in April for number 58 !
Cheers,
Dick

Well, Dick, its thank YOU for all you have done over the years, Classic jets is always a top day out, ones I will do my damndest never to miss.
Very unfortunate that after a glorious Sunday (vis. on Sunday from 1000 feet was unlimited with a light wind) but at least we saw a classic cold front passage, heavy rain, wind shift and temperature drop with a different air mass behind !!!
Funny how bacon sandwiches and coffee always taste better outdoors too, even if its piddling down with rain !
I think I can speak for all Classic Jetters when I say a big thank you to YOU and all those who help out at these best of flying days out. Long may CJ continue.
Happy new year !
David.

Well said David. Dick is a man of steel, he and Christine, plus helpers, putting the shelter up (and it staying there) cooking and maintaining a flow of refreshments. I think most of us wouldn't have even turned up! I enjoyed my one Spark flight...only 42mph wind when I took off! Torn between staying and flying and heading back to the shop to do a little business, if I'd known they were all coming today I would have stayed! It was great to see so many people actually turn up. My youngest looked at me with wide eyes after an hour in the van and said " Daddy, your hobby is not as much fun as I thought it would be" (then Jamie got his DF Viggen out and she remembered watching video of these vintage jets ;-)
Happy New year everyone.
Happy New year everyone.

Glad it cleared up a bit for everyone. Was my one chance to come along as I can't get Fridays off from work to attend classic jet days. As said, typical that the weather was so nice the day before. Disappointed to have missed it....roll on the summer!

Glad to see that fun was had by all despite the bad weather. Goes to show how much fun out hobby is to us all that we can brace any conditions & still have fun
Brill to see the Viggen take flight. Think you got yourself a cracker there Jamie and I look forward to seeing it fly in better conditions.
Thank you Dick & Co. for all your hard work this year. Classic Jets is normally one event I can attend every time but unfortunately I had to attend a wedding instead. ((((

Given the attendance in what can only be described as diabolical conditions, it goes to show just how popular Classic jets is, with many people turning up just for the social without any intention of flying. The forecast was for it to clear by lunchtime but still with high wind, did not think it was going to happen! Several of us took to the air, madness! but we all had fun.
If the rain stopped, the Viggen was going to fly! The DF god, that is 'Animal' helped tweak the motor and within seconds of it starting Paul Gray was there sniffing the glow fuel! all was going well until it was time to start it and fly it, Fuel supply problems were eventually overcome. I made the mistake of trying to taxi it with the inevitable result as seen in the video! got it into the air and was happy with how it was going until the engine note got much louder and the flight was cut short. Turned out the pipe had fractured and the entire latter half of the pipe was missing! Fan will need rebalancing and the scrapes from the flip over have already been repaired and i am waiting for the primer to dry. Thanks to Dick i have a spare pipe so it will be back in the air very soon. This kit is still available under another manufacturers name, builders are fitting them with turbines but mine will have to remain DF, weird i know but i love the sound!
Thanks to Gordon Smith for his pitting/model stand help and running after it on taxi and landing.
We had a good bunch of us in the pub for the traditional post meet debrief, looking forward to doing it all over again this year . . . . in better weather hopefully!
Jet meet season starts again in March with the first Classic jets in April
