Trevor

Thanks sfor the compliments.

Since this is a china arf the wood used in plane is in mm. Used 3/32 for sheeting the open bays in wings, 1/16 balsa was to thin in some areas. Removed the cap strip from each wing rib, used part of main spar to support sheeting, and had to add small parts of balsa at trailing edge to support sheeting at back of wing. Had to sand sheeting to conform to other parts. In some parts the sheeting got very thin. The builder of this arf was not to careful. One of the wing panels has a curved trailing edge. Getting the aileron straight dissimulates this.

At the beginning the idea was to use monokote to cover plane but since sheeting in wing was to thin decided to glass it and reinforce with carbon. The carbon used is acp.com 1inch flat carbon tape. Used three stands at top and rest at bottom. The thickness is about 1/64 to 1/32. Glue it with instant c.a in small step increments making pressure with fingers and the aid of a plastic bag. Faired the edges with light filling compound, and sanded so edge will not noticed. Afterwards glassed wings. Almost certain carbon strip will not notice.

The wings used to flex in original form now are very rigid.

Having a hard time sanding the epoxy flow coat to fill weave. Had to reapply another coat since first coat was not applied correctly and some areas the weave was not filled. For sure filling the weave with resin or epoxy is old school and labor intensive. Will try next time other method.

cheers

juan

Thanks for such a detailed reply Juan! I really appreciate that. It never occurred to me that the stock balsa on the wing would be in Metric vrs imperial. So there will be some sanding for me too. I have a lot of CF tissue laying around.. I think for my purposes I will cover the bottom with that.

keep up the great work... Looking forward to the maiden.

Sanding of prymer has started. What a boring part of the process. Working a few hours each day.

Experimented in doing my own heat shield and aplied today. Top flite microballons mixed in minwax PU seemed to do the job in my experiments. Got about 3-8 seconds extra before cathing flames exposing to flames from dremel torch. Bvm is very clever in rebranding other use products for hobby rc.

Opened hole in canopy for intake and ready to glue in place.

More work done.

Elevator glued, elevator servo installed, and link made.
Steering servo installed and link made.

The servo tray for this was to high so cut it off and glued new wood rails.

Aileron servos installed in wings with their linkage.

After gluing canopy a huge gap was apparent so had to fill it with filler and epoxy.

Started to install all turbine accessories, brakes etc, before final primer since a lot of scratches are done in this part.

At the moment all the different parts weight 6 pounds, considering the wings have a thick coat of primer that needs to sand of.

Very happy since want to have a dry weight of plane under 9 pounds and if possible under 8.

The weight of plane to thrust of turbine think is on target.

Installed home made UAT and pump.

UAT is made of dubro 2 oz fuel tank with gas rubber stopper, and use of a ceramic clunk at center as buble breaker. The stock UAT are to big for my need.

The sanding and filling is all over.

What a hard time I had doing all the prep work for painting.

The nose cone what a mess of fiberglass job, had to reinforce and use filler all around just to make it look better.

Started painting at last so on the final run to finish this baby.

Exited the Fuselage is done,,,,,,,,

Did the wire harness for all servos used all the available channels the rx has.

Do I really need a remote turbine cut off? The ecu has the standard shut off, but not sure if necessary to put remote switch to cut pump voltage to stop turbine. If Tx signal is lost the same problem exist.

Need to finish the wings pending color sand and polishing and installing the servo extension.

ALMOST DONE....

Juan,
I don't know what the rules are in Guatemala but here in the U.S. we consider the trim switch programmed to OFF as a "remote turbine cutoff". We are also required to program the failsafe to shut down the engine within 2 seconds if the radio signal is lost.

As far as I know, an additional servo operated shutoff is only required in Australia. I don't think it's a necessity and I would not use one unless it's required in your country.

Tony and Craig

Thanks for fallowing.

Craig
There are no regulations in Guatemala and thought the extra cut off was a safety issue. So will keep the standard cut off procedure and program failsafe.
Now with the revolution of quad copters being so popular they are considering all rc vehicles drones and want to regulate all airborne rc vehicle. Let see in what this batle end here.

Cheers

Looks Good Juan.. I think you will be more than happy with the HK covering. Ive used it before and I like it, and many of my friends like better that Mono or Ultracoat. The only down side it the backing is VERY tricky to peal off, As Im sure you have discovered by now

Ok guys,

Today a all nighter to finish last wing.

Sand coloring, polishing, glue aileron, make two extensions and done...

Let see if can get earlier from work to finish this bird and trial test turbine, brakes, and fuel consumption tomarrow.

Don't think is a good idea to rush a maiden, need to balace very carefully with fuel and without, and program the movements.

cheers,

juan

My electric dc motor in starting wand burned up. So could not start turbine to start test. Waiting for spare motors to come. It is getting dificult to locate high speed dc motors.Gws has the but who knows for how much time with the advent of brushless motors.

This are the first pictures of plane finished, needs more weight at front to balance properly.

On final count down to maiden.

cheers
