SKYMASTER F18F +POWERBUS new project started

I have received and started the build up of my first skymaster purchase an F18F in Jolly rogers scheme and also ordered the ordnance which i plan to fly with.
I tried to find any other recent build up threads for this model but could not find any. Michel(jetsrc) gave me some guidance and any other input and suggestions are more than welcome.
I got the offer with the Savox servos pre-installed and i must say Anton and his team did a good work on installation so not much left for me to finish it off.

Due to my desire to fly it with the ordnance i have ordered the kingtech180 .
I will use the powerbox royal SRS system combined with the new PWM system which will enable me to have only 3 wires to route at the front and control all the surfaces.
Also i will use Gaspar's valves for the pneumatic system for the first time as with the powerbox.

Thanks for the info Nuno, i saw the modification on the nose gear and i will consider if needed.
i will go for 25mm flaps setting for take off and 50mm for landing and maybe the airbrakes deployed when time comes.

I started off with the wing ordnance installation. I searched and found a couple of skymaster diagrams as to where are the drilling points on the wing.
I installed them in such a way that everything can be on or off anytime easily as i read some people put silicone at the base of the racks.Click image for larger version.

Both wings finished with ordnance installed and checked the servo installation from factory..i need to modify the rods so i can put the covers over them to hide them,as they are at the moment are 2 mm higher than it should so as to move free inside the cover provided.

I ordered the kevlar fuel tanks and put the standard skymaster fuel tank parts supplied. As i do not like to put the rubber fitting direct to the kevlar i made a machined fuel tank insert.
It took me a while to find a good placement of the tanks and i fixed them in place using silicone. i drilled a hole just before the center tank and placed The vent/overflow on the belly.

    Looks like a great build!

Here's mine with a Jet Central Rhino:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISK0ICZCiJ8

The K-180 will be MORE than enough

I found a benefit to using a nose wheel gyro. With it's narrow track gear it can get pretty squirrely on take-off's and landings. Typical of an F-18.

    Good Luck, Happy Flying!

Thanks Steve, i chose the K180 mainly because of the ordnance and hopefully it would fly it great with them installed.
Excellent flight and landing on your video. You did not use flaps on take off? what flap setting did you have for landing and where is your CG?

The elevators gave me some hard time as i was puzzled with some rings and one shaft protruded more than the other and the thrust pipe could not pass through them to meet the nozzles.
Also upon trial fitment i had a small ''play'' in-out of the elevator.
I experimented a bit and cut the shafts to same size and also fitted the bearing inside the hole and put some hysol around it taking care not to slip in the bearings and this minimized the play of the elevators.Click image for larger version.

one picture shows the extra part of the elevator shaft protruded, blocking the thrust pipe's way out. i cut it just 3mm after the hole of the split pin.
The other picture is the final result of elevator shaft set up tp minimize the ''play''.

I always use flaps on take-off .. about 10 degrees. I Probably use about 35 degrees on landing. I'll do some measuring in the next few days and get you the cg and flap measurements.

Due to using the Powerbox royal srs in combination with the powerbus system which includes 3 PWM and 1 splitter units i thought to tidy up the 3 wires that will end up in the power box as well
as some air lines so i could permanently fit the center tank and then attached the 2 parts of the plane together.

    Nicos,

Another small point you want to check is the main gear door clearances. On my Fei Beo F18F which is very similar to the Skymaster one, the larger of the 3 main gear doors needs to open before the small doors. Then the small doors need to close first before the large one. I got round this by operating the large doors and the nose gear doors from a UP3 valve along with the gear and then a second Robart valve off a separate servo to operate the small doors. The servos are sequenced by micro switches on the doors but there are plenty of other ways to do this. Same principle applies if you are using electric valves.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for the heads up.
Although i have not reached that point yet your info triggered me and i did try to open/close the doors and retract/extend the gears with my air hand pump and the doors are clear of the landing gear both in retraction and extension. However i noticed that one of the small doors is touching the large fwd one and will investigate at a later stage. this is how it looks on my F18F. is it the same door cut out on yours?

Yes mine is exactly like that and you are correct there is no clashing with the doors and the landing gear it's purely between the large door and the small doors. Also I was wrong, its the small doors which need to open first followed by the large one.

If you need any more info on how to sequence these, pm me and I will try to take some pics of my microswitch setup.

Nicos, On my Skymaster I just used two Jet-Tronics valves, one for the doors and one for the gear. I did not use a sequencer, I programmed the delay sequence on the Futaba Transmitter. It has proven to be very reliable. I did not have any issues with the doors as mentioned above.
