Phoenix models have just released a 1: 6 1/5 scale hawk. It's designed for a 120mm EDF, but it looks like a good canidate for a turbine

Maybe this is the next Falcon 120?? It would be nice to have a cheap option to get into a scale(ish) model. it comes with air retracts and oleos, and a full cockpit.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have my K80 in the Falcon 120, and this is designed for a 7kg EDF setup, so the K80 sounds like it should just be fine.

The major hurdle for me was the cost. I'm guessing that it will need a fair bit of work like the falcon120 did to bring it up to turbine ready standards. but I just ordered one, and it cost $629 (AUD) and that includes the air retracts and oleo's. So it could turn out to be a very cost effective scale airframe. The wing has definitely been oversized from a scale perspective, but then again, this ain't no skymaster either!

full composite or balsa wings with fiberglass fuse?

Ive got it's little brother from Blackhorse models. The Viper Jet with a 90mm fan in it. Very good Jet considering where it's from. All balsa ply construction. Was quite pleasantly surprised. They also have an L 39 of the same size as the Hawk, which would be a good candidate for K 80 power with the required stregthining.

I would even consider putting a turbine in the viper if Kingtek ever bring out a 3.5-4 kg engine. But do already have a big Viper.

I'll be quite interested in ya progress bro.

I built their 50cc Mustang Dave and it was a brilliant kit. I was really impressed with the quality, pre hinging and cockpit details. Also the hardware kit (except for the air fittings) was excellent and really well designed. The control horns were keyed so they couldn't move and after 60+ flights before I sold it they were perfect with the old DLE-55 rattling away in the nose.

With the retracts, I striped them down, cleaned, greased and threw back together with locktite and they never leaked once, In fact they would hold air all day. I did need to use some brass 4mm-3mm adaptors as the nipples on the retracts were for 4mm air hose. I have been looking at this one as well and will be interested to see how it goes.

Like the blackhorse L39 you could stick a P60 in that, not the best scheme though

It's good to hear some experience with the manufacture, and that's it's been positive. Had a look at the L-39 and I reckon the k80 would be too much, but my Wren 54 on the other hand..... Nah, that's slated to go into my 1/4 Me-163 as soon as I start building it if I stop getting distracted! The other interesting thing with that L-39 is that It's dimensional the same, but only half the weight, and but I don't like the chances of getting this one up and flying well on a 90mm EDF unless it was a really hot setup. My last build was actually a 90mm EDF Hawk.... post some pic's and vid's to keep everyone entertained while we wait.

Hey Disco, I'm hoping like crazy it's glass, but I'm guessing from what the guys have posted here that there is every chance it will be built up. not that it's a major. it will be lighter, but I'll prefer glass given a choice. Guess if I need to glass the model it'll a perfect opportunity to change up the scheme.

The new US importer has said that there has been a UK importer appointed for Phoenix, but has not named who...

they are available in Germany already.

Phoenix have been around quite a while, but the inference I took from their comments was that they have changed their UK distributors.

A quick email to mcGregor's will confirm or deny any of those rumours.

MacGregor gave up with Pheonix because of "Chinese price games" I looked at their stand at Nuremberg and again the quality is very good,although the Oleo legs looked like the BH Viper units which I tried to machine for a friend...toffee metal.

Lets hope we hear who the UK supplier will be soon as we need more realistically priced jets available in the UK and indeed elsewhere. Particularly as the Under Carriage is included with these models

After much stuffing about, I finally received the new 120mm BAE Hawk (Sea Hawk in phoenix's eyes).

The price has skyrocketed from the initial $625 for the first batch to $775 for this second shipment.

Quite a large EDF model and very very light for it's size. Seems very well built and quite strong. Defiantly stronger than some of the Chinese glasswork i have seen! All the framework is plywood, with only the sheeting done in balsa. Good amount of glue used on all the joints. Seems like Phoenix are on a winner with their construction technique. bare airframe weight is 2.3kg, guys are flying these with a hot 90mm setup at 5.2kg AUW.

I've taken a pic of it next to my mod'd and glassed flyfly 90mm EDF hawk for size comparison.

Landing gear is pneumatic and comes with some "festo" styled fittings. the springs in the oleos are WAYY to stiff for this weight model and I think my end up being a replaced item. Half the reason for this is that like all other Phoenix/CMPro etc models they use the smallest wheel possible, always way too small for scale!

Just trying to decide if I go 90mm EDF, 120mm or turbine with it. From some initial reports not worth wasting time with a 120mm EDF setup. Seeing as I have the Wren 54 doing nothing until the 1/4 Me-163 is finished, and there is already one of these successfully flying in Germany with a Lambert T35, I think it might turn out to be a good option......

Yeah I plan to have it there with me! I have already pre-registered for the event so I'm all ready to go on that front, but I have to get a fair bit of work done on my other models so not sure it will be reay to fly by then.

Sounds like Marlborough is going to be a pretty big event! I thought your Hawk had already flown??

Have you done any mod's to the elevators on your Hawk?

One thing I am a little worried about on this one as most hawks (including the real ones) have issues with elevators. Very close to lossing my flyfly one with flutter!

Good to hear mate, would hate to see such a good looking model go splat due to the older failure prone stabs.

Working on a thrust tube for this Hawk at the moment, and busy getting ready for the event so building wont start till after that.
