The Little Jet Company's New scale product line starting with these removable 1/7.5 scale Pitot, AoA, AIC and TAT probes. You get six probes in a set all pre painted just cut the hole, glue the backing plate on and your good to go. We have nearly sold out of kits with only 8 remaining! Email us for more information. [email protected]

Plenty of progress on the F14 as I'm trying to get it ready for September I'll update the thread in the next few days.

Rudder servos have all been installed, there were no mounts in the rudders so I had to make my own, while the hysol was drying I started weathering the gear. I just need to add a few hand painted details and of course some decals and they will be ready to go back in.

No mounts in the rudders? I haven't received my kit yet, so curious what was SM's intent here. Was your kit faulty or did they mean it to be that way?

Colin,

I can only guess that alex is referring to the rudder horns. The rudder servo's are mounted in one of the rudder formers.

Alex what did you use to cut the antenna mount areas out?

Sorry guys I didn't articulate the issue very well...

When I opened up the rudder to see how to connect the rudder to the servo, I found just an empty space. I made some carbon plates and built a bit of internal structure then injected loads of hysol to bond it all together. I'm not sure if this was left to the builder or not but the instructions show you just cut a slot for a ball end horn and screw it in from the bottom of the rudder. It would be nice if this had been done at the factory perhaps mine was an early one, I'd be interested to see what other people got. Here is a link to the instructions so you can see what I mean.

Alex,

I had the same thing, no balsa or at least not enough to bond the two carbon fibre horns to... I opened the bottom of the rudder some to bond the horns with glue. the horns are angled as well, so I can run the actuator rod in a straight line.

here's two pics of my rudder base. I will add a carbon base to the bottom of the rudder for stiffness later.

I know, looks a bit messy, but this was before cleanup. I also tried to mount the horns to the outside as much as possible, giving me good leverage on the rudder.

My approach was much simpler I just drilled a 6mm hole into the balsa sunk in an aluminium rod which was drilled and tapped 3mm for the ball joint.

That would be a body reamer Alex. Nice work on the rudder horn....that should be solid.

I have a couple photos you can use to make data plate decals for the gear if you can use them. These are large files over 5 megs of the gear in close detail frm the F-14D in Hawaii. Let me know and I can email them to you rather than post them here.

Here is a link to what they look like, I find them great for cutting holes in composites, it needs a little finishing afterwards due to the slight taper.

No worries, If possible send Skymaster physical paint chips of your required colours. They will match that very accurately, its very hit and miss via email as all sorts of things get distorted with colour via a monitor. My client who ordered the F14 was also very specific and they turned out an exact match having sent the chips.

Looking forward to seeing yours come together.

Cheers, Alex

Thanks to everyone who ordered a probe kit. Here is a picture of what you will be receiving in the post. Progress has been really good on the model and it should be ready to do the ground testing next week.

Alex I sent you an email with my address to get mine shipped. Thanks again!

Oh meant to ask does the real f-14 have the base areas like your set? I never looked to see if the base of the antennas matches the antenna color itself.
