Default Mibo A-10 Gen 5 build thread.

Hi everyone.

Here is the thread to post your build about the Mibo A-10 Gen 5.
We have now 4 kits in the USA and a few more in the Middle-East being built.

We have one demo kit at the shop in Houston that we will bring to Florida Jets.

Here are a few pictures of the demo kit.

The fligth deck:

The tail section ( rudder details ):

Gen 5 comes with the rudder balance tab fitted:

The ladder door:

Some fuselage details. All scoops and antennas are placed at the factory. This is part of the extra work package.

Details of the wing:

The landing gear comes fitted with all the doors articulated. Cinematics is 100% scale.

The engine installation is made easy with a tray system. The customer can choose between 120-160N or 80-120N. The difference is mostly on the way the engine rails are installed. On the bigger engines, the rails allow tilting the engines so that the tailpipe-engine assembly has the same angle of about 10 degrees nose down. On the 80-120N option, the engine is flat and only the thrust tube is tilted nose down by about 5 degrees.

Our demo kit has the 120-160N option:

I am expecting mine to get shipped to Dubai next week. I will use it to make the Gen 5 assembly manual.
I will post the progress of the build here as well as on my blog.

Here is the product page of the A-10:

Subscribed...and watching this thread intently... the level prefab is very interesting? Can I see some pics of the gear and the doors installation please? Is this the "extra work package" version? Does the extra work package include more work than in the pics here?

This is the extra work package.
Just the flare box on the back of the gear pod got forgotten by Mibo on our kit for some reason. Not a big deal as it takes about 10 minutes to fit.

The package inclcudes:

- all flight controls hinges and horns installed with the proper geometry set from precise templates

- all scoops and cutting in the Kevlar fuselage done
- fuselage hatch mounted
- ladder door bay and doors mounted (closing with magnet)
- formation lights, EGS antenna and flair dispensers mounted, corresponding scale accessories fitted
- cooling intake mounted
- GAU gun mounted

- stabilizer hatch latch fitted
- wing tube sleeve fitted in the fuselage
- front canopy frame trimmed and mounted to fuselage - operating canopy system functionally mounted to fuselage including rear canopy hatch and trimmed rear canopy frame
- fowler flap hinges ready mounted on wing flaps functionally attached

This saves about 30 hours of work for someone who has built a scale A-10 before and up to 50 hours of work for a novice A-10 builder. It also guaranties scale placement of all the details and scale cinematics of the gear, doors etc...
All the details and hinging/ cinematics setup is done at the factory with precise templates...

Yes, it is an incredible model.
I think that this is the most advanced super scale kit available on the market and one of the best flyer as well.
With very little work you'd get a JWM competition plane in your workshop...

Oli, great pics.

I am sorry I didn't get mine posted yet but mine looks exactly the same. The amount of work that is already done is amazing. I have finished the nose door assembly with servo installation, the elevator is mounted and servos are in. I will attach the rudders today too I hope. The wings have the track system set for flaps - I will just need to mount the servos and pushrods to the hatch covers and add the LE slat and wing tips....and lights of course...

The gear seem to be great as well. Oli helped me run through the setup and first few cycles when I received the plane. They make a little noise as expected but I am sure nothing that we can appreciate when flying. I have not tried the brakes yet. It is interesting though how simple the fuselage layout is when not dealing with all of the air system servos and valves. I have the Weatronic 12--22 in the nose above the nose gear. Retract and brake control just behind the nose gear and batteries to the left of the nose gear.

The ladder door may be the main access to everything, the canopy system is nice but takes up most of the access room. I am hoping to be able to reach some battery leads through the canopy.

Anyway, I bet this plane will receive quite a bit of attention in FL. Everyone knows the Mibo A10 but to see what you can get delivered is pretty impressive - at least I was impressed!

Dave, did you have the "additional work" done at the factory?

Yes i did.My Gen 3 basically took me a few years to build with work, a new baby, no instructions and retracts that leaked. This thing is so much farther alone I might even have it ready this year and it has more scale detail then I ever had on my other one. I spent a month just firing my nacelles last time!

I have been going back and forth about assembling and flying and painting later versus getting it ready for paint ASAP. The more I look at it though, I am just going for paint since there isn't all that much left to build!

I have had mine assembled already. All the hinging is glued, the wing tube is in and drilled and it all lines up well. The fuel tanks drop in and are of very good quality. The engine nacelles are preassembled with the tailpipe/turbine assembly. The engine nacelle mounting tubes are installed with holes throughout the fuse and the nacelle mount for wiring/fuel. Simply months of work for me already done and probably done as well as I could do it, if not better since they are assembling them all this way.

I can't say enough about it. I summarize it is like opening a "bvm" scale jet without the paint with more work done than on my UB out of the box. The canopy installation is pretty cool and functional. The opening mechanism also unloads when up so it doesn't have all that weight on it when open.

Dave

Oli,
Mine also does not have the flare dispenser mounted to the gear nacelle - is there another piece that the individual plastic square flare dispensers (4) fit into?
Thanks

Yes, I am expecting to be there. However I got a glitch in my time table that I am sorting out right now. I will know this for sure in a few days from now.

Hi everyone.

My plane is awesome but I may need to put it on hold for some other plans in the next few months. I am considering selling it and reordering a little later. Mine is as you see in the phots, all of the first 5-6 extra work planes I think were the same. It has so much done on it but I cant have it done until 2015 the way I want so I am not going to rush it....

If ayone is interested It is advertised on RCU.

Woody and Oli have done a great job with ordering, support and even Skype meetings for a few special details. Fantastic support for this outstanding plane.

If it doesnt move soon I will just keep working on it for next year.

Thanks

Well.....looks like I am keeping it!
Dave

Oli,
That looks great. Are you using a slowed servo or an actuator?

These MIBO guys are taking away the joy of building such a superb kit .

I guess Gen 6 will come with a pilot that will fly the airplane for you

Just kidding

A slowed servo, as per Mibo's design.

Here is the setup in the closed position:

In the open position:

Yep, it takes about 30 minutes to get the canopy working and 10 minutes to have the full cockpit setup .

Is the Mibo factory "pre build" up to the very high standards of an experienced builder making his own?
I have seen some factory pre-builds that were not close to perfect and a lot of re-work on the fine details were needed.

Hoping it's true!

In a word, my opinion is - yes.

Out of the many things already done for me this time, I found only a few small things that could have been a little bit better. Looking at all of the "work" though, I suspect they did it better than I could have , especially within a similar amount of time since they are setup to do this work on the planes.
