Thumbs up Own design test flight at Wroughton

I have been flying a Boomerang Intro for a couple of years now and while I enjoy flying it, its fair to say it isn't the prettiest thing out there. I've looked at what sport jets are out there but they nearly all come with a hefty price.
So about a year ago I bought a complete set of Intro wings and designed a fuselage around them, wings, tail, position of the turbine are all in the same place as an Intro the only change being the elevator/stabiliser is at the bottom of the fin rather than perched on top.
The idea being that it should fly much the same as a Boomer and the C of G should remain the same.
I looked at all the jets, scale and sport and pinched ideas off a lot of them to come up with a design that looked OK and was practical to build
Made out of balsa, ply & lite ply with some carbon cloth reinforcement, the whole plane has been skinned in lightweight fibreglass.
Its still in primer as I wasn't going to have it painted until I knew it would work, just some solartrim to help orientation.
Got to Sunday just gone and it was time to see if a years work was worth it. I waited until things quietened down in the afternoon at Wroughton and went for it.

I was well pleased with the test flight, it needed some aileron & elevator trim but flew as I had hoped just like the Intro but perhaps a little more agile.
Thanks to Geoff White for looking over my shoulder and talking me through some sensible checks like a slow fly by, flap trim changes and such.
After putting some down trim with full flap the landing was as easy as any of the Boomerang models.

Next step is get it painted which Lozza has volunteered to do and thanks for taking the photos even if he had to use my Canon
Thanks to all the fellas at Wroughton who were so positive about my efforts.

It is great when a project turns out well, flying a self designed "recipe" jet. Congrats on the maiden flight!

A fab looking model which topped a great day out. Just wish I had taken my own jet!

Looks like a good straightforward airplane. I bet it flies really well!

One question though, why such a thick airfoil on the stabilizer?

I used the same airfoil as the Intro stabiliser as at least that way I could be fairly confident that the flying characteristics would be much the same and I don't know enough about aerodynamics so I played it safe.

Excellent project and very well done indeed. Nice to see someone having a go at their own thing rather than just building ARF's like I do, Using well established parts from the boomer was also an excellent idea. Glad it flew well. Now Lozza can make her look a million dollars

Great idea and nice looking design! Just curious as to what size turbine you installed?

I have just finished an 80% Turbinator which is the same size as the Intro. I hope it flys as well as your design.

I have a Wren Jubilee 75 in it, more than enough for it, good luck with the Turbinator.

Great job! Nothing like the satisfaction of creating something yourself.

Can't wait to see it painted. - John.
