Hi Kevin,

Maybe a crude picture will help clarify my question, I watched all of these videos but I still cant picture the spars and how they are mounted. He sealed the wings up before the last video.

I am referring the the carbon fiber "spar caps" (if you will) and how they couple to the actual spars that bolt into the fuse.

Is it like the top cave painting or the bottom one?

You guys did it right. So many people don't and then they wonder why the structure fails later. I have that problem with people asking why we have to bevel the edges to have a smooth transition from the core to get the inner and outer plies to contact each other. They always say just leave the core because a built up wing would be sheeted of over the spar so what's the difference.

Kevin

I like watching Bob's YT videos on building the F/A 18. I am in your area (Crosby, Texas) and very interested in building my own Yellow Aircraft F/A 18 or F/A18E.

Thank you

Shawn

Hi Kevin,

Bob has not posted in awhile, did he do another video showing how he trimmed this foam? All I can see of the wing opened is the next to last video, this is a screenshot and I can't see the spars cap on the wing skins. I am trying to do something similar but I am not as far along, just planning, thanks.

There is a 3rd option done for ease in manufacture, many composite wings(CARF Flash for example) would have the carbon tow or spar cap laid up against the spar on the inner skin. Agree 2 is best but maybe slightly more work to manufacture? option 1(top) should be avoided.

There is also Option 4, which allot of the molded DLG, hotliner and F5B guys do. Its also what i do on my F14 wings.

You cut a slot in your sandwhich material, then fill the slot with Carbon tow. You can then sandwhich the tow in the core with unidirectional carbon fiber on both sides as well. Its a bit more work, but its very strong once done.

Kevin,

Are these in production and available ? Has the prototype flown yet ? What is the production schedule and availability time frame and prices. Are flying stabs and vertical stabs available as well ? I'm interested in all the above. I think you guy's will do very well with these, hope it comes through.

Did some strength testing and loaded wings down with weights. The wing itself was fine however the aluminum spar under high weights had slight bend. We are going to a stronger aluminum wing spar material but the rest is good. Very stout wings. We will be building the wings with new spars and flying soon.

Leading edge flaps will have to be done with seperate mold and are on the back burner for the time being.

I would think if the wing didnt fail and the stock aluminum joiner plates bent, the wing and joiner setup is fine. The big bug has been flying for Years on those joiner plates, i cant see any real reason why to put stronger ones in.

Default Composite wings

just to let you know. The wings are being flown and are doing great. Too much drama on the production side. The original three sets are all that will be built

Bummer - I don't know the history of "B1 Bob" but I do love his videos, always wondered why they stopped.
