BIG A-5 Vigilante build
#101
Spent last evening reading all the posts on this project.
You are going to need some man power and financing to do this project.
Understandingly you will be molding this project in segments/pieces, but that is a lot of material, time, manpower and money to do.
it is a huge model! A museum piece! Fabulous effort, I hope you keep at it. Wish I was close by to lend a hand. Molding of some of the boxy shapes on that plane will make some extra challenges, possibly multiple part molds. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Hi :
I,m keeping an eye on the progress. Looks great so far!
My stabs and flying rudder aerodynamic balanced to eliminate any flutter possibles. I worked the late Ivan Munninghoff in their locations.
I had well over a hundred flights on my prototype with never a problem. I still have the proto model hanging in my shop.
Best Regards,
Phil Nuckles

hi sierra tango,
The first model is going to be constructed of wood. If it flies someone can pick up the ball and run with it. A few people are pushing for molds and glass fuses, but for now that is beyond what I want to do.

I See Temped the bulkheads for the Vigilante fuse. I only did half to save material. They will be flipped over to trace out the whole bulkhead. I also made a short video on how to use See Temp for making templates. It really comes in handy when scratch building. I can now trace out a 1000 bulkhead sets now that I have the templates…….Not http://youtu.be/kte4DuMZRNE

Vladimir stopped by to show me his progress on the landing gear. I snapped a few pictures with the mock up wood strut in a few different positions. I talked to Dave at Robart today. They will be sending out some 6" wheels and brakes for the gear. It will also help with the visualization of where everything is supposed to go. It is funny. I asked Vladimir about this or that on the gear and he tells me he is not sure yet…. He is designing the details as he builds them.

Nice find Scott…….I traced out the bulkheads for the nose of the plane. I need to engineer room for a cockpit and a nose wheel well. I think a floor on the datum line and raise it in the wheel well area.

I doubled up the plywood and nailed it together with paneling nails. I pushed the nails through and cut them off. I was then able to cut out the bulkheads along with some cut outs to create a box. # 7 needed to have the wheel well cut out but I nee to temporarily save the structure for construction. they will be separated and then scabbed together.

Thanks Ed……I cut out for the box and butterflied a few of the bulkheads open. The next step is to scab them together and then start standing them up. I need to talk to Vladimir about the size of the nose wheel. well I opened it up to 3' wide x 4 1/2" deep. That is what I am going to cut out of the mating plate that he made. I know the pictures are not much to see but like the 1/4 scale Panther I am taking a picture of everything and posting it for posterity.

I made some scabs and sprayed them with accelerator (the side with the marker on it). After opening everything up they got scabbed together. I stood the bulkheads up with a little dab of hot glue to get a visual of everything. The nose is almost 4 feet long. It can easily poke your eye out……..(inside joke)

Hi Paul
In picture 2 you can see some extra material on the top inside of the strut. that was going to be the down lock onto that top plate, but it was in the way upon retraction. The down lock is still being brainstormed.

I started standing up the nose. The plane is flat on the bottom except for the very nose and tail. The spacers on the bottom sheeting creates the curve in the nose. They are glued to sheeting and the table so nothing moves. An aircraft ply floor is glued in. It will become a box. The nose wheel well will also become a box. I also put some notches in for some stringers.

Never saw one in the flesh, here it is.
just got back from the Footlocker Cross Country Championships held in San Diego, California.
Arrived on Friday and had an hour and a half to spend on the aircraft carrier Midway.
Built in 1943, it was in service for Fifty years which means it had a lot of Naval aircraft on board from the Vietnam and Korean wars.
The A-5 and the F8 Crusader were my favorites.

Vladimir stopped by to drop off the main landing gear. They are pretty much done except for the actuator. I can use them as they are to start fitting them into the plane. He did a great job machining them……………..When Vladimir stopped by he asked that I tell Sierratango that he is very interested in your glider work. If you have time he would love to communicate with you about what you are doing with the molds etc.. Vladimir is a big scratch building glider nut. He has enlisted me many times to fly his tow planes to get his gliders up. Here is his profile page. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/members/vholis.html
