Default Skymaster F-104

Hi guys been a while since my last post, too much work I guess. Anyway I wanted to post here a short video of my Skymaster F-104, this one is powered by a Jet Central Mammoth and has a Powerbox Royale SRS as well as JR servos, Futaba receivers, Powerbox and Duralite Batteries.

This one has been a bit longer as a project, we had the F-104 finished in September of last year, with very little time to fly before JUSC event in Argentina. Over there I had a receiver problem with a lot of luck it was with the jet on the ground so not too much damage done.

After summer came and now I am starting to have som fun with it. The F-104 has no pipe modifications or any other special thing. I did notice that with the recommended CG it is too nose heavy so I moved it back 10mm and the jet completely changed how it fly's.

In general I love this jet, it fly's really well and stable I actually was very surprised on how good it fly's given the very small wings it has.

I also configured the integrated iGyro the Royale SRS has and this makes the jet even more stable on windy days.

Anyway having a lot of fun with this one, the scale detail is awesome and the retracts are out of this world. Also the power from the Jet Central Mammoth is just perfect.

Here is the video, it is not very long but I hope to have a new one soon:

Very cool jet. Love the color scheme and it looks like it flies amazing.

Congrats.

Excellent! I'm building now. Will you please post pics of your tail pipe at the tail cone. Mine is offset from factory but like to center it.

Did you CG upright or inverted. Curious to know where all of your equipment is installed and what that is exactly. I'm also using the Mammoth.

Will post some pics as soon as I have the model with me. It is at the club so I do not have it here.
The CG I didi it with the jet in normal position. Not easy because of the location.

Michel,

the powerbox SRS feature didn't work when you had the rx problem?

Best,

Michel it looks and flys great. Would be interested in the all up weight and C of G. I am in the middle of building one but I am putting on Flight Metal so it will not likely be finished for this season but I am happy with the progress. Here is a look at my building blog on it.

My guess is that the receivers where not in the right place, both very close together and in the nose section in the end. I had the jet just landed very far away and I lost signal in the ground. I moved the receivers further back in front of the pilot and put one on each side and haven't had any problems.

WOW that is amazing, the work you are doing is simply outstanding, congratulations that is probably the nicest F-104 I have seen.
I didn't weight mine but I installed all standard items.
two futaba receivers
powerbox Royale srs
two Powerbox batteries 3200
one Duralite Lifepo, 6000 mha
jet central mammoth
jr servos
the rest is standard

With the mammoth it has plenty of power and the jet flys really nice. I am not sure how much weight you will add with the flight metal.

regarding CG I did not do any pipe and turbine angle modifications, I did the first flights with the recommended CG and it was too nose heavy, it used a lot of elevator for turns and full elevator for landings, I moved the CG back 10mm and a whole different jet, much easier to fly, better handling in general, for landings I now use about half elevator now. I guess I could go another 10mm back on the CG but I have a big event coming and I really like how the jet is handling right know.

By the way, details for scale just put out a great chute system for the F-104, I just got mine and I will be installing it soon, as well as a complete light set.

good luck with your F-104 it looks really great.

Thanks Michel. I have Dan's chute system but have not had a chance to install it yet. As far as weight goes I doubt if the flight metal would be that much more than the paint. I will be using a Behotec 220 in it which is quite light in comparison to the Mammoth but will have to keep the PowerBox and other accessories back to make sure I am not nose heavy.

I will post some pics later this week, I installed all as forward as possible and still I used quite some lead on the nose.

Doing some work on the 104, need to move the C of G back so I need a lighter nose.

CG. 100mm from the leading edge.

Peter Goldsmith posted this CG on Facebook, he is a very good F-104 flyer.

Great video Michel ! you need to make more posts like this one.. About the 104 are you sure that in this landing the gyro was on? and if it was do you remember if the gain was set low?

Looking forward to the andes jets to see the 104 flying again.

Hello all. Im looking to know if anybody knows what the gain values are for this jet and the SRS?
Also, what fixture are you using to CG the airplane?

Or maybe the people who have this plane rarely use RCU anymore.
