For those pilots who would like Route 66 to be more family oriented rather than just a jet event, consider an educational tour of the Lincoln historical sites in Springfield. You and your family can learn a lot about American's 16thPresident and then your student(s) can report back to his/her respective class so the tour will be treated as a class assignment. The assignment willnot only satisfy any concerns school administrators/teachers might have but will relieve any misgivings you might have regarding absence from school.

Less than an hour's drive from Litchfield, plan on two day's to comfortablycomplete your tour. You can visit the sites individually or forconvenience, go online (www.springfieldwalks.com)to arrange your tour and purchase tickets. Although hours have beenreduced due to budgetary cuts, most sites will be open from 9:00a.m to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

If you park at one of the ramps located downtown, you can walk to five of the seven most visited sites:
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum(www.alplm.org), The Old State Capital,Lincoln's Home (www.nps.gov/liho),Lincoln's Law Offices, and the old train station (Lincoln Depot).
You will find Lincoln's Tomb (www.lincolntomb.org) located in Oak Ridge Cemetery a short distance from downtown, and New SalemState Park (www.lincolnsnewsalem.com) is approximately 20 miles northwest of Springfield.

I think it is reasonable to believe that any Educator would totally appreciate & accept an absence for this US History experience.
