Finally got my model balanced. Moved everything except the receiver to the front of the main fuel tank. Placed the ECU battery and two A123 receiver battery packs on top of the nose gear box. Unfortunately, with the three-blade prop, still needed 24 oz lead in the nose to to meet the recommended CG of 175mm.

Cutouts for the exhaust were made in the fuse and top hatch and then the turboprop was installed. I also started working on the internal layout. Based on David's experience, I'm attempting to install everything forward of the fuel tank to prevent a tail heavy situation. It's a bit of a challenge because everything in front on the Powerbox tray will be mostly hidden by the front instrument panel.

I received the 1/4 scale Premiere Pilots jet pilot. His sitting height was about 1.5 inches too tall so I did a little surgery to get him to sit at the proper height. Personally, I think the helmet is a little too big for the body but I'll live with it. I guess it's better than being too small.

We flew the PC-21 at Kentucky jets and had a few very nice flights with it. We used a 23x14x5 Biela and it flew great but lacking speed. The factory 24x23.5x5 gave us good speed. The plane flew awesome and being that we had a 25 to 30 knot full crosswind landing, she showed how well she flies in extreme flying conditions with great control authority!

Hey Danny,
Appreciated all the information you guys shared with me about the control setup on your PC-21. Had it not been for the radio issue I had at the event , I would have flown mine. Anyway, I hope to see you guys at Super Jets South.

Hi Michael,

I've been slowly working on the Pc-21. I have the lights installed, all servos and control horns are installed and the hinge covers over the flap hinges, fuel tank and UAT is installed. I'm working on the finishing the radio equipment installation, air lines and fuel lines. I'll have some photos to upload by the end of the week.

Hi Danny,

Please share any info you may have. I talked to Bret before Kentucky Jets and he said you guys had some info that Anton shared with you guys about running temps and what to look for and would be willing to share it but when my friend asked about it, Dana said he didn't know what he was taking about.

Any video from the flight with the 5 bladed prop?

Thanks,
Kirk

Hello Kirk,

Only info we have is on the gear doors and that they must be removed, reinforced with carbon fiber and instead of one opening rod, you need to add a second one as the door is large and requires the extra strength to be on the safe side! There is a couple of videos on the Kentucky jets thread of the flight with both of the 3 blade props we used! Check them out!

I purchased the UniLight large jet bundle from DreamWorks but couldn't use the nav lights. I was able to use the landing, rear position, and beacon lights from the kit. I purchased 2 red and 2 green nav lights for the wings (each wing has two nav lights) and 2 white ACL/Strobe lights for the wing tips. Although it cost more, I would recommend purchasing everything separately instead of the bundle so you can get the lights that fit into the wing.

You can also purchase additional items from UniLight that DreamWorks isn't carrying, such as Y cables, various lenses covers, and resistors for 3 cell A123 batteries. I placed an order with UniLight on a Tuesday evening and had they were delivered on Thursday. I was impressed considering the items were shipped from Austria.

PM me if you want a list of the part numbers I used.

Here's a short video showing the lights. The batteries are just about depleted so the lights aren't very bright. In the video, the top beacon light is pulsing as it gets brighter and dimmer but to the naked eye it ramps up from dim to bright to dim simulating a rotating beacon.

Kirk,
Did you use any any heat resistant adhesive to fix the rear strobe light or does it have the aluminum heatsink tube?

Hi Reuben,

The UniLights come with an aluminum heat sink attached. (Photo is from the UniLight web site).

See POST #928 on the Jets Over Kentucky thread. First part of the video shows the flight with the Biela 23x14 prop. Notice the wind sock. Second part of the video shows flight #2 which was done with the Skymaster 24x23.5 prop.

Finally got the maiden flight done on my PC-21 today. After taxing the plane around for a bit to make sure it was tracking straight, refueled, line the plane up on the runway centerline, applied throttle, and after a roll out of approximately 250', it was airborne. The plane required no aileron trim, but did need a few clicks of up elevator to get it flying level. After about 5 minutes in the air and while still at some altitude, I reduced throttle and lowered the flaps. Did not notice any pitch change with full flaps. After one more trip around the field, set the plane up for a landing approach, reduced throttle to idle, and set it down on the runway without any problems.

Very pleased with the handling characteristics of my PC-21, and hope to get more speed from it once I acquire a prop with a bit more pitch (prop used for maiden flight was a Fiala 24x17). For those yet to fly,or even start the engine in their PC-21, I would suggest you apply some form of protective insulation to the engine hatch cover. IMO, the heat from the engine will damage the hatch cover if the cover is not removed quickly after prop stops spinning.

Great news David. I'm hoping to get my maiden next weekend or the weekend after.

Did you get damping oil for the oleos with your kit? My kit didn't have the oil. If you didn't get the oil, what did you use?

Kirk,

I did not get the oil for the struts with my plane. I am using GS Racing Pure Silicone Diff. Oil (10000cps). You should be able to find it at you local hobby store

This is my second flight with the PC-21. Still need a few more flights to get the plane dialed in and to get comfortable with it flying from a short runway. Here is the unedited video.
