There is a strap on the top and bottom of each exhaust stack.

Would it not be an idea to use springs, rather than the bolts? Just a thought

Yesterday, the PC-21 had its maiden flight. The maiden was performed at half throttle. It needed 3 clicks of right aileron and a couple clicks of up. The cg is set 175mm from the leading edge (right in the middle of the wing tube). Once trimmed, the PC-21 track very well and was very smooth. It felt like a pattern plane. The was no trim change when the flaps were deployed and it slows down nicely for landing. Thanks Basil, Frank, and Will for the help in getting it in the air.

No problem Kirk you're a very skillful and calm pilot during your maiden flights...I wish I could be as cool as you Congrats on both your pc-21 and viper test flight.

David mentioned after his maiden that the engine cover gets very warm and needed heat shielding. I added three coats of BVM heat shield but it didn't completely prevent the fiberglass from getting hot and the paint from bubbling. This morning I went to Home Depot and purchased a flame protector heat shield blanket plumbers use and lined the inside of cover. The heat shield blanket is effective up to 2500F or 1371C. It took two blankets with some left over to cover the inside of the cover.

Hi Kirk
A good thing to do is to get more air from the air intake into the engine room to get moore cooling and open the space around the pips to get the hot air out .I have done that to my plane
and it is running pretty cool

Hi Tom,

Thanks. Did you open the intake ducting so more air could get into the engine compartment? I did notice in your photo that you had more space around the exhaust pipes. Good advice, I'll do that to mine also.

Per Tom's advice, I increased the size of the openings around the exhaust pipes and opened up the intake ducting to get more air into the engine compartment. Testing the opening, I found that air still wasn't going into the engine compartment so I made a "ramp" out of G10 which forces air into the engine compartment but still allows air to get to the turbine intake. Using an air hose for testing, it looks like this will work quiet nicely.

I'm happy to report the heat shielding worked very well. After a flight, the top of the engine cover was warm to the tough but not hot.

Here's some video of one of yesterday's flights showing the vertical performance along with a high speed pass at the 2:50 time mark.
