Fei Bao Jets Dolphin build thread by RCISFUN

Well all the planets must have aligned on Saturday, as my Dolphin finally arrived. It was shipped on the 16th of February so that's not too bad considering where I live! I wish the story ended there but of course....The box looks alright, a few scuffs and scratches but nothing serious. Upon closer inspection tho the rear fuse suffered a huge compression of some kind. There are four cracks in the mounting flange area and they carry onto the sides, top and bottom. The pilots left and top are the worst with paint damage as well. I am going to try to post some pictures on here today and was hoping I could get some advice on whether I should try to repair or if I should try get a replacement. I should also mention the front vertical fin former has had the glue joint popped loose on one side. It would be a real easy repair and is the least of my worries. Standby for photos.....

Some photos from FL Jets, the original prototype with the production model, the major changes are: wing tip design has been changed, removal of gear doors, and the addition of the trailing link struts. Additionally they have cut in the slots for the servo arms on all surfaces.
I believe that Eric Clapp from Jet Central USA has this Ferrari scheme in stock for immediate sale

I was having some issues with the flaps on my Dolphin S so I made an internal flap linkage, I decided that I would also modify the Big Dolphin whiles I was at it.
The horns that I designed for the S also fit the large dolphin, it is a very easy modification once you have the horns cut out.
The advantages of the internal linkage are numerous, lower servo torque, and being able to have the servo arm parallel to the control linkage with full flap deployment resulting in low holding torque to name a couple.

Rich,
I thought about doing that when I was gluing the horns, just like the Flash. I'm trying not to modify anything so I can get done. A few household projects really slowed down the progress
I spent most of today programming the Jeti and learning it at the same time.

So I put the maiden on my Dolphin yesterday, what a nice flying no stress jet it is. One or two clicks of aileron and that's it. I followed Rich's recommendations on the throws and he is very close to optimum. I need a little more roll rate for my personal taste, but everything else is good. My cg came out a little ahead of 11.4, I'm right at 11 inches and I could move it back a bit. The nose will tuck a little in the turns but nothing too drastic. I will put at least a dozen or so flights on at the present point before I make any changes. One thing I will try tho is to slow it down a little more on final....on my first approach she went by at eye level and would have touched down a couple hundred feet from where I was so I went around and pulled power off a little further back and was rewarded with a nice smooth flare and touchdown. Not a lot of drag even with full flaps and crow deployed so something I will work on for sure.
I have to thank Jose at Global Jet for all his help on this project, he cut me an unbelievable deal on a new Rhino and I could not be happier! The throttle response is incredible and the thrust is just as advertised.....after 6 minutes of flight I landed and found I had about a quarter left in my saddle tanks and a full main so the timer will be reset for 8 minutes which should give lots for blown approaches. I will try to post some pics of my setup later if anyone is interested. Overall she is definitely a winner!!

Great. Had the same landing issues, reset the flaps to max throw. Will set up crow next. Mine tucked hard in the turn till I moved the cg fwd, added 4 oz wt. dont know how much yet as I havent rebalanced yet but expect about 11" also. I need to move some satellites around to optimize reception also. Cant wait to get it out again. Will install telemetry package after test flying complete.

You may be interested in the internal flap linkage modification I made, here is a short video of the operation, if this doesn't slow you down maybe a boat anchor will.

Hey Rich, my pilot is the guy you get with the Great Planes M-12 Pitts. He was looking bored so I recruited him for jet duty! Might be a little big but looks ok I think....

Last night I had what I consider the last of my test flight regiment. I have the cg 1/2" fwd of the recommended position. I was able to get 3 1/2" flap travel and use 5/16 crow with full flaps. I fly on the low rate settings on elevator and increased the aileron travel about 20% from recommended high rate. It's now perfect for my tastes. I use 50% expo on all surfaces. Very stable and turns/rolls quickly. Final approach was a good nose up position and rock solid stable. I just adjusted the throttle to maintain the glide path. My next mod will be to connect my Cortex (which really isnt needed) and change my TX to my DX18 with telemetry. Telemetry will include GPS, "G" meter, and turbine info. I am very pleased with all aspects of this jet. The construction by FB, the service from Eric Clapp, and the tons of thrust from my Rhino SP, which ran on diesel the last flight. Couldnt tell any difference from kero. It's a great jet with great presence in the air and on the ground!

Hey Tom, a quick update on my dolphin...I used the same flap setting as you at 3.5 inches and 5/16 crow and this thing lands now like a butterfly with sore feet! I can't believe the difference an inch of flap made but that is the answer! I can carry power right to the threshold and she flares so nice now....like you I am super happy with mine and the service from Global Jet and Jose from Jet Central.
