F/A-18C gear detail pictures. Anyone going to an Airshow soon?
Hi guys,
i've posted this before in the off season but am hoping that now during airshow season there might be one or two headed out for a static display of an F/A-18C (no superhornets) to take some shots for me.
What i am looking for is all gear placards on main and nosewheel, so that all of them can be read. Below an example i found on the net, but because it is wrapped around half of it cant be read....so i need shots showing it all around. There are multiple placards, and i will need all of them.
I'm working on a scale landing gear for a 1/7 hornet and want it to be right. Maybe someone headed for a NAS display can take a few shots for me?
Thanks for the help and best regards
Hank

Damn that would have been great. Anyone else going somewhere? Its airshow season and there should be plenty on static......none over here in my region in europe sadly.

I went to the airshow yesterday and no 18's were there. I always go to the Reno air races and they have always been there. If you still need the photos shoot me a pm and I will get them for you. The air races are in September.

Hi,
Miramar is coming, and hopefully I'll be all mended by then. Even before that, I could go to the Flying Leatherneck museum an shoot something for you. Have you reached out to Paul Reese? I know he's got terabytes of photos of that stuff.

Thanks a lot for all the swell help. I'll take all i can get, but no need to go just for that. I'm sure that one time or another someone will be at one incidentally.
I have talked to Paul, but he had a HDD crash and lost a lot of his stuff....including the decal files for the gear. Saving it would apparently cost unbelievably much so he abandonned the idea...
Anyway thanks a lot, i'll be looking forward to the shots

Most of the text on the placards is way too small to decipher. On the placards I did (the gear in the link above), anything that was going to be legible was done very accurately. And in the finer illegible sections of the text, line lengths were replicated as closely as possible, although it is just a random series of letters broken undo word-looking lines of text. Wish recovering an old 60gb firewire drive didn't cost $1200 I spent $2500 last year in data recovery...no bueno. All my gear documentation photos are on that drive also.

I'm going to an airshow in Cold Lake this weekend. Not sure if the placard is the same on the Canadian Hornets or not but I'll see what I can do and post them anyway.

I've already invested so much work that i want to go all the way and get it "just right".
Canadian gear should be identical to the C versions....
Great, i'll be on my way to Japan then, but i'll come right online when i get there tomorrow night.
Thanks a lot guys
Hank

Hi Hank
if you still need photos for a hardcore-scale build maybe i can help you. In the end of august i visit the Air Pyerne 14 in Switzerland. It's the largest Airshow in Europe. I have also good connections to the Swiss airforce. They fly the F/A 18 Hornet C-Variant.
I know how important are accurate photos for successful scale building. Here some pictures of the many and tiny scaledetails of my F-100.
If you need something, let me know.
Regards from Switzerland, Rainer Willisch

Dale, great, thats perfect detail shots that help very very much.
Interesting enough, the gear is identical except for the main gear dampener....it seems to be single stage and similar to the one supplied by yellow on their gear. My guess is that it was made for land-based use while the USN has a dampener specially for carrier use. Interestingly, the swiss hornets have the USN type dampener. Very much detail to watch out for on this bird.....
Does anyone have a chance to take comparison shots on a USN version?
Rainer, thank you very much for your offer. Anything i can get my hands on i will gladly take. I already have a friend at swiss air force seeing what he can do, but the area the planes are parked in is a no-photo-zone. I will be at Air14 on the september weekend, but am not sure if you can get close enough to make the stencils readable.
I did follow your F100 build, its amazing. Too bad you live so far from zürich, i'd love to take a look firsthand!
Best regards
Hank

Red that'd be great.
I'm not sure how the nomenclature on the preproduction match the series, but my guess is that it's the same. I need shots of the stencils on the gear, just like the ones in post 1 and the ones dale posted. I want to be able to recreate all the stencils with original text....
Many many thanks!
Hank
