Default Best KingCat JetCat turbine?

I'm getting ready to outfit a "new to me" KingCat and wondering what may be the best JetCat turbine? We own five turbine planes including a P200 turbine my son flies so familiar with turbine aircraft. I routinely fly an Élan with a 90RXi which was previously powered by a 140RX. It flies well with the 90 but it was a blast with the 140. Mostly just all around sport flying.

We we have a remanufactured P-200 fresh from John R but it's residual thrust and fuel burn, to me, seems just to much for this airframe. I'm leaning towards the 160 but they're not available. I'm thinking the 160SX would be ideal but have never even seen one for sale. (See other thread on 160's) The 180's teething pains have me a little worried and the 140 doesn't seem like it would be enough. What do you think? I know there are other great manufacturer options but I'm a JetCat guy as John Redman has been with me from the start through thick and thin....

The 180 software tweaks are almost complete, but I remember flying Bob V's Kingcat with a P-120 a few years ago and it did nice rolling loops!
A P-140Rxi is a chunk more go...

In my opinion an140rx should be more than enough, my kingcat has a 160 class turbine and it's already too much.

sorry for a semi-hijack, but why do so many bobcats have 120s in them if 200 is way too much?

The kingcat would scale up enough to have a 200 wouldn't it?

I have no idea...its literally just a noobie question

Thanks guys. I might add that I live in Lubbock, Tx and we have density altitudes nearing 8,000 ft at some times in the summer.

Over the life of the KingCat, I have flown them with everything from a P-120 to a P-200. A friend even has one powered with an AMT 450...it is a real animal, but a little heavy. I had the opportunity to fly John Redman's P-200 powered KC a few years ago. It would ROG, but heavy.

My favorite power plant for the KC is a JetCat Titan. It's 34 pounds of blow is actually is too much, but if it is turned down to about 118,000 RPM, it makes about 28 Lbs and seems about right. At that power it will still bust 200 in level flight at full cooker.
At that max RPM, the engine is not working hard, and still has tons of power. It will last almost forever at that RPM setting. I will report back next Monday night, after we test my new FLY NAVY KC with a JetCat P-180....more to follow.

An old P-120 is a good power plant if you have one. They are very economical and very reliable. The old P-120 is a real workhorse. .

Harley, our first engine was a P120 and it was the standard IMHO. Don't have one now though. I'll just have to focus in on a newer 160 model and watch the want ads, I guess.

Weight! The P-200 is huge, some airframes carry the weight (like the KC) but there is always a "sweet" weight where everything works out nicely. My KingCat had an old P-160 in it and it was perfect in my eyes.

I have 2 Kingcats
One with a AMT Pegasus , cockpit, smoke and all the doodads and one Kingcat with a Jetcentral Rhino
The AMT Pegasus +Kingcat with cockpit version turns out a little heavier.

Hello,

A few years ago me and a friend fitted a Kingcat with P200 and some full throttle flying :-).
It flew fine and impressive, but if you want to keep it alive for a longtime go with a P160 or P180.

Landing with the P200 on idle was possible with a some wind, but mostly I shutdown the engine on final. Quite some Crow used to slow it down :-)

Well I bought my KingCat with a P-160SX installed and IMHO, it's the perfect engine for those of use who have to deal with high field elevations or high density altitudes in the summer. Our field elevation is 4500' ASL, the density altitude can and often does hit the 9,000' area in the summer afternoons.

Titan, 140sx would be excellent choices. I had (effectively) the world's first P120 in my old kingcat and it was just fine.

But since you already have one, why not that P200? Just use a bunch of crow.

160 to 180 size would be fine, I saw a p-160 kingkat, it had plenty of power.

P140RX would be perfect, got a few flights in now on a friends Merlin 140 powered example and its really nice to fly, very light feel, plenty of power for the verticals and easily fast enough for most, Im guessing that would put it around that of a Titan, I'd be going for the lighter setup

Since you already have the P200, I would use it with a lot of crow. That is what I would do if I had a Kingcat, but I don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maidened my KingCat today with a Jetcat 160 SE. Plenty of power most of the flight at 1/2 throttle. I think any more power than that would be unnecessary. And I overpower everything !

I purchased a used KingCat as my first jet. I picked a Kingtech 140 for price point and for possible use in a BVM F16. There are several cats at my field most with Jet cat 160's and bigger. They are amazed at how well the KT140 flies the cat. They also comment on the throttle response of the KT140. MY Cat is heavy with nose repair and full cockpit. Flying in the Houston area high heat and high DA.

Owned two. with a wren 120 and a 160. I'm using approx 30lb thrust dialed in now. Perfect. With more thrust I find it hard to trim out at full speed range. With 30lb it will still go to the moon.

Thanks for everybody's feedback. I'm leaning towards a 180RX or the new RXi if and when it becomes available. We can always pull the stick back!

Suggest that you wait for John R. to iron out the problems with the latest 180RX engines before you consider one of those engines. There's a thread or two about him heading south and doing some testing on a fix for the 180's problems and the reports look good. Can't remember exactly where I saw the best thread on it or I'd link you to it, sorry I don't have that immediately available.....

Found it....
