Hi all, how is the gear mounting on this airframe. I know it's meant to be light... did they compromise the strength of the gear mounting to get there? Are there anything like flex plates? Repairable?

No just a solid piece of carbon fiber, which is used as a bulkhead in that area. Mine was glued in just a bit off so I had to shim one gear to get it to retract through the fuselage cutout. Otherwise the gear is pretty solid. I'm using the aluminum struts and behotec retract units (air). Are you building one now?

Ok, thank you. I'm seriously considering getting one... like on the verge of clicking buy. I just got my waiver and already getting bored with the sport jet 😡 Wish I had just gotten a J-10 to start with. I'm a 3D and Heli guy.

I was going to use the stock carbon gear and retract set.

Thinking MKS HBL380 on elevons (because I have one), either HBL575 or HBL850 on vector, not sure on rudder or NW or canard... I'll have to get something HV, don't have any.

Looking at the manual... I think I'd replace the nozzle carbon rods with some nicer central hobbies rods with Ti ends, and maybe use H9 pro links on the ailerons instead of the all-thread. I don't like/trust that stuff.

I originally wanted the McLaren scheme but it wasn't available at the time I bought my J-10. I got it at BITW two years ago. I had to beef up the push rods for the Elevons. Looked weak to me as well. The push rod setup for the thrust vectoring is weird. I just went with the items in the kit. Have you downloaded the manual and looked at the pictures? Real messy, I spent some extra time to lay everything out so that I could remove the nose easily for transport. So glad I did that. Only thing I haven't done is install a gyro. Not really sure how to do it, haven't seriously looked into it. Only thing it would allow me to do at this point is hover in front of me. Some day maybe.

So you haven't flown it? I plan on thrust vector right away, I'm a 3D guy. Plus, if the gear gets stuck up you can just hover it onto the ground

Flown it many times, just not hovering 3 ft off the ground. And if you get the jet, I have some special 3D printed mounts for the canard, left and right wing servos. PM me if you're interested in getting those.

Hi Sillyness. Not to detrack from this jet..Im building a J10 at the moment. But I noticed that you said you like f16 and 3D..have you checked this out http://www.flexinnovations.com/product-p/fpm60.htm My mate showed me this..not for me but maybe for you if you dont want the delta...personally I like the delta..have euro which I already enjoy. I have the blue white red in the J10....ie standard scheme...the build so far is very easy compared with others I have done...the usual few things that need adj etc. On the whole nice and easy to get my hands in to build etc..... Still waiting for my engine to turn up...will see if I can fit it in...bought a crowbar just in case.... just joking.

1) General impression vs Eurosport?
2) Is the carbon gear nice and strong?
3) Any drawbacks/regrets?

Thanks!!!

All good to hear. I saw the flex before, very impressive, but I don't think for me either. I don't like the paint, especially, nor the extra $3,500 flying price, nor the mystery servos like BVM. I think I'm going to order the J-10 and carbon gear tomorrow.

Hi
Still waiting for my engine to turn up...and have nearly exhausted all the things I can do on it...to make it ready.

A couple of questions:

1) these "fins" that protrude from the bottom near the back...I noticed that many of you have not fitted...is that because they come off or the average nature of the fins themselves...ie the tape that goes over them.
Im tempted not to fit them.

2) A stupid question...what size ball driver are you guys using for the Wings and Stab. I noticed the Wings are a 5mm bolt..and the rudder smaller. I am going to try and get some tools made up or make them up as I have none that are long enough that fit.

3) Stickers. Did comp arf change their build and start putting out stickers for the plane. Im guessing we get those made up ourselves. Going to take to a place and see if they can replicate some Chinese airforce display team ones...

Just need my engine and some tools and then its programming time...and of course last Cof G check....

1) I glued mine on recently with hot glue. I didn't bother with the tape, it doesn't stick well anyway. I found a blue marker and applied it to the edge all around. BTW I glued the fins straight down at the edge instead of at an angle. There just for looks IMO.

2) 5mm ball driver for the wings. 2.5mm for the vertical stabilizer. Both not very long. For the socket heads in the back for the exhaust nozzle you will need to get an extra long extension to reach them when you install/uninstall the nozzle.

3) No they didn't. But I did put the Chinese demo markings on mine recently. I got them from tailor made decals in Germany.

Hi ...big thanks...thought as much with the fins.

Re the stickers...you still have your contact in Germany..if you are okay can you share...if not that is cool.

Cheers

This is what I use on my wings, They work great! Normal ball drivers will dent your wings unless they are very long. Bonhuss Stubby L Wrench set , Metric .
Available at Dreamworks

I decided to paint my J10 in a camo scheme. Not Top Gun level, but a nice change of pace.

Color scheme looks great! Wish someone would do a large scale version of the J-10, or the Gripen. I had a large scale version of the J-10 from a different vendor that flew very well, and was perfect for the local 400' runway.

Looks great! How do you like it so far? Hopefully we'll get a chance to fly our J-10s together this year.

Thanks, Ken. I'm enjoying it! It's perfect for the small field near my house.

Anyone know where to get some nose pins from? Mine bent today. I've sent CARF an email, but was hoping to get something sooner, versus waiting for it to be shipped from Germany.

Test flew mine last weekend. Trying to get an inside line on setting up the gyro for normal and 3D flying. The image in the instruction booklet is quite blurred. Could anyone help? I am using an 18 MZ with Powerbox Royal and a JB 220 for power.
TIA,
Aamer

Hi all..Well after a millenia I am finally finishing this jet...been busy at work and family etc.
The Jetcat 220 is in and Im looking at the thrust vector.
I moved the engine slighly forward. ( the mount is much longer so I can do that ...still have 3 screws per side holding it in ). All good.

By moving forward I have my 2cm of space between the engine...and my C0f G is almost right on with the batteries right in the nose.

Now Im trying to work out how many degrees of L/R and U/D vector movement I should get. The vector tube only just pokes out the back.
that means if I go to far to one side etc it will be putting hot in on the artificial tail cone of the plane.

Did you guys cut the tail cone down to avoid it burning the planes cone?

or

Did you guys limit the vector tube/cone from going that far?

what kind of movement in degrees did you guys get?

Also a question on the brakes on the CF gear...Did you guys have issues with the CF gear and the axle rotating. ie allows the brake hub to move...if yes how did you solve it....

any help is always appreciated. Burning hot here so hoping to have this out of the hangar and flying in March (when our days of total fire bans are finished )...
Thanks in advance

@SR117 - On mine, I limited the tube travel by eye. On earlier flights I burned the tail cone a bit at the bottom left, that's when I made the adjustments. My pipe is in-line with the rear cone. I'd didn't shorten the cone at all.

@Billa - This jet is really a joy to fly. I still haven't put a gyro in it, not sure I ever will actually. Only benefit is to be able to hover close to the ground, but if you got the setup for a gyro or two please post it.

@Dubd - Did you ever get a new pin? I'm not sure the diameter.

@Ken, I had a friend make one for me. I also bought some back-up pins from CARF.

Here is a video of one of my last flights. Flameout at the end.

Hi Guys,

Maidened my J-10 today. Flew 5 perfect flights, all worked well.
Jetcat P220 RXi, Savox servos, Powerbox Mercury, Futaba 18MZ.
Starting to love this plane...

Here are some pics, and 1 video.

Cheers,

Ziv.

Hi guys. I've got about 20 flights on my J10 / JB220 / Powerbox Mercury / JR8911's all around.

Starting to get onto things, but noticing that I have a weird wing rock when I get up above 70degs Angle Of Attack. I've played with gain settings on the ailerons, rudder and TV and doesn't seem to matter what I do, the wing rock is there. CG is set like others since it is very light on the nose wheel.

Heard a theory lattely that perhaps the 0.12sec/60deg speed of the JR8911's is too slow for TV? Heard another theory that perhaps the 40% expo I have in my ailerons to too much and damping out the gyro ability?

What are you guys running for expo and gains on your ailerons, rudder and TV?

Here is a video of the best I've gotten it so far, but take note of the wing rock at 0:48, 1:02 and 2:12

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
