Default Futaba MZ18 - MZ14 buddy cord connection hints & tips?

I'm trying to help a guy out to get some stick time on his new Xcalibur jet but he says he's having trouble
linking his two radios he intends to use, an MZ18 & an MZ14, via the voltage compensating buddy cord.

The model is programmed & trimmed & flying nicely on the MZ18.

Can the two radios be linked via the buddy cord?

Can the settings for the model in the MZ18 be copied into the MZ14 to save entering everything into the MZ14
manually?

While I can muddle through the programming of these radios I use the 12FG so I'm not totally familiar with them.

Thanks, John.

Yes and yes. Just remember that you have to activate each channel. I haven't done it in over a year, but have both radios and have done buddy boxing with them and it wasn't too hard.

Thanks Doc, I didn't want to waste hours attempting the impossible.

I'll read the manuals but quickly, how do you copy the program across?
Do you copy the model on the original transmitter to the SD card then
swap the card & copy to the second transmitter?

Or do you need a PC & some software?

If anything special is needed I'll make sure he has it at the club tomorrow.

Thanks again, John.

John, you need a PC. The 14(CF card) & 18(SD card) use different cards.
You need a PC to copy file from one card to the other.

You need a PC to copy file from one card to the other.
And a card reader I take it?

Do you need software or just drag & drop from one card (drive) to the other?

John.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I'll get him onto it after tomorrows flying & if it's too much for
him to handle I'll grab the radios & plane & set it up for him.

John.

You can use this instead of the cord: http://www.futaba-rc.com/accessories/futm1010.html

That is cool. I forgot about the compact flash vs SD…. I can't recall if software updates affect things either, I would guess making sure both radios have the most current update would be wise.

Not wishing to dampen your ideas but I think you will find that you can copy memories from the 14MZ to the 18MZ but you cannot go from 18MZ back to the 14MZ.
The 18MZ has some functions that the 14MZ doesn't have so the data won't load back in properly.

Only way will be to input it I manually.

Mod, am I right to assume the same issue would crop up if I used my 12FG?

It runs the V2 14 channel upgrade software. It does run an SD data card so
importing the model data is physically easier, don't know if would work electronically.

John, you dont need to copy the data to the 14mz, just open a new model memory and assign the channels. Everything else is done in the teachers (18MZ) Tx. I use the wireless system, works a treat. FWIW you can only copy models from the 14 to the 18 but you need a PC and card reader.

Thanks Pete, I have it all working.

While assigning the channels gets things working you still have to match each channel for
travel, direction, etc so you don't have changes when you operate the trainer switch.

A Boomerang Elan program was copied from the 14MZ to the 18MZ & tweaked for the Xcalibur.
The Elan program was still in the 14MZ so it just needed some adjustment to make it match the
Xcalibur. - John.

Hi Pete,

When using the wireless system, can you control more than just the basic four controls? If so, how many?

Cheers,

Jan

Hi Jan
student tx must be in 7ch mode, so yes, up to 7. eg. if you are using 2 outputs for aileron and 2 for elevators you are reduced to 5 controls. Does that help?

I guess I've been doing it wrong.

I just enable functions for the sticks and the teacher radio (18mz but the 12fg does the same) keeps the mixing etc. My buddy box is just an old four channel box with no setup or memories. The student just calls for flaps gear etc. I like the mixed mode even better ad I can bump a control without taking the aircraft from him. I cant believe how hard some of the other make make it where you have to match every trim to train.

Would love to try the wireless method but will have to find a cheap fasst transmitter.

I like the 'wrong' way you are doing things, sounds much simpler than the right way!

What I watched was the servo monitor function, this demonstrated what the actual transmitting TX (the 18MZ, the teacher's radio)
sends to the receiver. The Elan program on the 14MZ was different to the program for the Xcalibur, the Elan had flap mixing & a
couple of the channels were reversed. When the trainer switch was activated the servos moved to different positions & couple of
servos moved in opposite directions as reflected in the servo monitor display. I had to fiddle settings to make them the same.

In my case perhaps I have a smart radio arguing with an almost as smart radio. In your case you have a smart radio arguing with
a dumb radio & the smart one wins all the arguments! - John.

John

Use different model memories in the 14mz, assign your channels and do the reversing there, that way you can train on any number of models. Each Tx must be selected to the same model. Maintain all the mixing and set-ups in the 18mz and there you can decide how much control you give to the student.
