Here is a stand that Dean Wichmann and I designed for this aircraft, very versatile for other airframes as well.

Peter,

Did yours come with any decals, logos, CARF name or other material already attached to the fuse or wings? It appears that the others on this thread got an all white model.

Yes you get a vinyl graphic set to match the paint scheme you choose which you need to apply yourself.

Have not updated in a while but I am almost done.
Installed tank, turbine turbine support, RX, Powerbox baselog. Still need to place batteries, set CG, adjust final throws, affix graphics and final checks.

Hi Peter,

Does that rudder protection come with the kit (turbine mount) or did you had to make it up yourself?

Cheers,

Ed

Nice job Peter. Do you have any type of spacer between the heat shield and the vertical fin?

I still find it funny that with all this technology in our models, we still use rubber bands for the gear doors.

Mine is on its way. DHL messed the delivery up. The model is taking a tour of the US. They can't seem to find Arizona.

No the heat shield does not come with the kit.
Yes i have made a small set of wooden spacers between the rudder and the metal.
I also realized that I had to move the turbine support equipment otherwise I cannot get my hand in the fuse to tighten the wing bolts.

Peter, I am also building a turbine powered glider very soon, although not the CARF one. What metal did you use to fabricate the heat shield?

This was a piece of tail pipe but it really does not need to be so since it is so far back that it will not get too hot. It is just protection for the Fiberglass. You can use a thin metal sheet from the hobby store which is a lot easier to cut.

DG800 is done. Just waiting for better weather to assemble outside and set the CG.
At the moment no 1/3 scale pilot planned. Once I decide will modify cockpit to install pilot. I checked the 1/3 scale pilot prices and was not encouraged to see how overpriced they were.

Peter,

better weather? Flying season is at full swing down here, you should come down for a visit. BTW, was nice talking to you over the phone and the Tutor gear conversion worked flawlessly.

Could one of you comp ARF DG800 owners help me with the exact length of the wing panels.
I am wanting to know what the length is to see if they will fit into my trailer.
I know its close to 3m, but chasing the exact dimension, whether it be 2.9m or 2.85m.

great build by the way !

thanks in advance.

hallo.
I am planning to install a Evojet 170.
turn the rpm down to 103.000 and you will have approx. 10kg thrust.
I will strengthen the turbine holder as it is not strong enough.
if you would like more info...

It arrived. Looking it over and wonder if anyone else has questioned the strength of the canopy release wire? If it breaks and the canopy is closed, getting the canopy open is not going to be a pretty task. Did anyone modify it or use something besides that little grip nut on the end of the wire?

Mhhh, and how long the turbine max. RPM will stay on 103.000 ?

Looking forward to some pictures during your building process FB, always nice to see.

Grt,
Berto.

It is strong enough, no issues there but I agree regarding the small nut they used which the steel wire wraps around, it is very poor thinking on CARF's side. Use some Hysol and make the wire end larger and stronger and you should be OK.

I did a static test stand run of my Merlin 100 and took some very precise temps of the turbine at multiple points along the length of the can. If anyone is interested, I can send the data including a diagram of the locations the temps were taken. They are interesting and I suspect any engine in the same general thrust category would be the same as the EGT on most of these turbines are very close. In addition, I got the skin temp of a piece of aluminum 40" behind the turbine at full power shaped like a vertical fin. It maxed at 230F. The kit mount has a built-in offset so this temp represented the worse case so far as the potential high temp the fin might experience in a static condition.

I am getting closer to finishing mine. Big CG question. Why do they recommend empty tank CG? Clearly any fuel will move the CG aft considerably especially with that rear bulb. That means your entire flight will be with an aft CG including landing unless you burn it all before landing. Forward CG is better than aft CG. What am I missing?

Comments? Experience/reports from those that have flown theirs? Are you making continual trim changes through out the flight as you burn off fuel?

Just a tip. I have a Paritech DG , with a EMA electric pod, with the intention of converting it to turbine. I didn't like the way it flew, rather sluggish. Then someone pointed out that the spoilers were being sucked out. So make sure the mechanism overcenters so they remain retracted !

Must check CG with an Empty tank as per the recommendations by CARF had the same issues but once I flew her she was fine that way ,currently getting just over 360km/h out of her so definately not a sluggish beast

Thanks. Comforting to know but still wondering why. Does that mean the CARF CG is too far forward? Is the CG envelope so big it doesn't matter?

Did you notice an aft CG on take off requiring trim change?

Do you have to make a lot of trim changes during flight?

Thanks
