Default Jetcat Turbines on Diesel

To diesel or not to diesel. That is the question... I am considering switching over to diesel on my P80SE, P16SX, and earlier version P120. I am currently running kero and am not interested in running Jet A. My discussion with Redman concluded in, "No problem to run it". I'm interested in any feedback from folks currently running diesel. Any issues on start ups etc.

Thank You in advance for your comments...

Bill

Your questions should be directed to the people who service them. They are the ones who see the inside of the engine and can give you an honest opinion of weather you should use diesel.

Its funny you bring this up,, I have been wondering about it also, and was talking with another member the other day about running diesel. I have just purchased my secondJetcat turbine, I have a 120sx in my ultra flash, and I just bought another 120sx that I am going to be putting in an F16. I actually called JETCAT yesterday, talked to, I believe his name was Richard,, He stated all the JETCAT tech guys were at Best in the West right now, but he may be able to answer my question, SO I asked him about running diesel in my jetcat engines,,, His EXACT answer was this
" We do not recommend running diesel "
So that pretty much sums It up. I have heard multiple guys say that they run diesel in their jetcats with no problems, I have heard others say you may have to make some changes,, And I have heard people tell me just what I was told by the jetcat Rep,,it is not a recommended fuel supply..
it does not seem to be an issue with the Kingtech, and jetcentral guys, just the JETCAT

i test many engines including Jetcat with DIESEL fuel and 2T oil with no problem
very old engines or little engine give some problem on idle or on startup (combustion chamber)

Raron,

I have spoken with Richard as we'll. He is not a tech but has told me the same. Most recently Redman has told me that there is no problem with running it. Curious to hear from anyone who has been running diesel for a period of time.

thx,

Bill

I switched to diesel in May I think it was. Im referring to my P-80se. Before making the switch I GPS'ed my Spint jet on Kero doing 168mph with out a dive, immediately after take off, flat and level. Then Slow flight for the rest of the flight. I then emptied the UAT and added diesel. Same exact pattern and the top speed was 195mph!!! I did not change one single value. (Gas start) Here we are about 6 months later and not a hick up of a problem. Bearing spin freely and no build up of coking. I use KT oil.

You will notice however a small amount of poping while at idle. Dont worry about it. Doesnt happen in flight. Also when you drop the throttle quickly you might see a puff of white smoke and again on shut down for sure you will see it. Again.. nothing at all to worry about.

Running P80SE and loving it. Cheap, easy to find. It does burp a little at idle, but goes away after a solid run. Try it.

I have wondered the same thing. I think the gas start engines would be fine. But what about the kero start. I have had to change the start settings on my Kingtech's to run diesel, but we can not change the same type of settings on the jet cat ECU's.

I have read many posts from JetCat users that have switched to diesel; and from my personal experience (running diesel in an SPT5), absolutely no changes are required. I was afraid I was going to have to change some ECU settings in order to run diesel, but it fired right up and ran.

The KT takes just a few small changes.

does anyone saw an engine that runs diesel, after 100 hs of run time ?
2 of ours turbines ( jetcat and wren ), back of service after 70 hs ( running JET-A1 ) absolutely perfect conditions of all parts, they change bearings only.

Hey Bill,

Take a read thru this article that Jeff Daly wrote for contrails about a year ago. Goes into quite a bit of detail on fuels and pros/cons of each. You will probably recognize a lot of the terminology.

http://www.jetpilots.org/contrails/C...all%202013.pdf

cheers,

Paul

Just five gallons. The guys who gave me feedback have been doing it for years though.

Hi Paul,

I read the article. It had good information... I was still wanting to get real world in the field feedback from folks who may have been burning diesel for a while. That was the edition that has the really nice blue large Viperjet !!!!! I was bummed that I couldn't fly it this year up at Princeton. Bad igniter as we suspected. Should get it back from Jetcat today or Monday. Glad I brought the Bandit with me as well !!!

hopefully we get a couple of more flying days this year...

Thx For everyone's feedback. I think the P80SE will be my first to convert. The driver for me switching is that I will start snow birding it to AZ and I understand that kero is limited...

thx again,

Bill

Hello everybody. I am currently running diesel (ulsd) in a Jet Cat P70. NO changes on Ecu. About 25 gallons used. No problems on start up,running. Just some smoke on start up and shut down. Also notice a gain in power

Hello everyone,

All JetCat engines are able to be run on diesel without issue. This was stated here a number of months ago. I am not sure why Richard has made this statement and will check thru that tomorrow.

Once again, all JetCat engines are fine when run on diesel.

Ok I tried diesel in my 120SX Kero start. I fly at 5400 ft. The turbine started fine and took throttle fine as well. I get a lot of popping at idle that I do not like, so that will be my only flight with diesel in my jet cat. George

My 120sx is the same, little popping at idle and on start but, it continues to run fine. No flameouts and throttle response is good. I think it makes more power than it did on Kero too.

The popping at idle is associated with the higher density of the Keri in the oiling system. It is flashing off on the turbine wheel with a bit more energy that the kero. It is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.
