At first I thought he was going to exceed the starters duty cycle, but as the video progressed, I remembered the video from March Labs, where he was "breaking in" the bearings on a turbine. It was actually a Jet Joe he was screwing with. I am surprised he didn't burn his house down.
I wonder when March Labs got the MiG-15??
I think the sparks are called a "Hot Start". Turbine wheel blade erosion?
Enjoy!

Hard to say from here, but it did indeed look like a series of 'hot starts' which got slowly better over time. Especially later in the vid I thought I heard him cutting the fuel off momentarily to manage the temps, then back on. Not unheard of in older turbine engines. God only knows what corrosion was inside that thing, and I'll bet that's what we saw burning off in those sparks.

That engine is toast. Instead of going through everything before attempting to start it, it looks like they just decided to fire it up. There was a moment where the engine was not turning with a fire burning inside. That's bad! And smoking from several places is not what I consider normal either.

Those sparks were the remains of the bag of tools left inside after the rebuild - gotta love them for the sheer balls........... next video will be of it flying inverted a few feet of the deck and then pulling a 10G vertical - can't wait

It is great to see some of these old engines running rather than being static in a museum, however I guess the Russian one is unlikely to survive long judging by the video. The Aussies have a much better idea of what to do but I fear for the guys hearing as they didn't have ear defenders on.
The best of all these videos I think is the guys in the UK running a Rolls Royce RB211 Ex Tri-star in their backyard. They are a knowledgeable group and had the APU starter set up to start the engine. However I wouldn't care to be their neighbours!
