Hi Planeinsane1
Thanks
- Are this SM travel values correct ?
- What is your choice for the CG point ?
- For extended gear and full landing flaps, have you a pitch change ?
Thanks

Hi,
For information, on my model 2 servos of the nozzle were moved just in front of the K210 to reduce the mass behind the CG.
The 2 carbon tubes (linkage) are thus guided in two places to avoid the bending.
Control of the final CG in few days !?

Good afternoon! It has be forever since I posted in the build thread, I have been working on my F-14. I finally got everything out and ready for test runs, I did a start up on the turbine and then put everything together and did some taxi tests. I have never owned a Jetcat before and the manual is useless but I was surprised it started right up after priming no problem, infact its the best and fasting starting turbine I have owned so far. It took awhile tinkering around with the ecu control box but I eventually figured it out, im still not sure about a few things like the throttle learning and how things work with futaba since the instruction are written for JR folks. Anyway everything went great the tires were flat so taxi took a bit of power so I added 30 psi and fixed that issue. I had already increased the main strut psi to 130 but one side would hold so I will check the pressure on it and will probably check to see how much oil is in each strut and then bump up to 140-150 PSI which should be about right for full tanks. I had not added any air to the nose strut so its completely flexed the entire taxi test. I checked for hot spot and none that I found, I also checked the thrust vector pipe to make sure it was good and no problems there. I did notice the canopy sucking in just a little at full throttle, so I will open up the wheel wells a little. Only thing left is to check my programming and test fly it! Videos are uploading!
After the test I threw on a little polishing wax and boy does it shine!!!

Hi everybody
this week in Frnace it's was the mainden fligth for my AVANTIS and the F14 fron eric.
Both plane need no lead ( Yes 0 g !!) for the CG value !!!
The kingtech 210 G for the AVANTIS and 2 P160 Jetcat for the F14.
3 tests Flight in the same day for each plane...and all were OK !!

Ol I dont suppose you would post your CG data, control throws and stab center measurements to add to the database? Congrats on a good weekend I am hoping to maiden mine this weekend and if I can get motivated maybe both.

Well after a looooong time coming looks like tomorrow is the day, I got permission to use a private paved 4000ft runway for the maiden tomorrow. My cg is more towards the aft limit but still forward of it so fingers are crossed. I need to get one of those fancy xicoy cg machines to do some review videos on.

Just an update, I was unable to fly the jet yesterday so the wait continues. Upon arrival at the site the runway was extremely narrow, I dont know how they heck you would land a real plan there. I barely managed to get my 46% bipe back on the ground, the runway was so narrow the wings on my plane almost touched edge of the runway on both side. I decided not to risk it, plus there were power lines and trees that didnt show up in the imagery I looked at prior to going. So maybe MS Jets if I can make it, I replaced the wheels on my trailer in prep for the road trip and found my wheel bearings completely destroyed. I am worried now if I can even make MS Jets I cant seem to find the right bearings locally yet.... Pretty flustrated with all problems coming up in prep for the flying season Stay tuned

congrats on on the maidens!
I noticed that you have cutted the bifurcated air inlets in the fuse. Why? Is it to save weight ? Also noticed that you opened the retract holes, good ide I will do the same as I am using a BF300 turbine and will need all the air inlet I can get.
i am a little worried about the vector thrust tube as it has small travel imo, i saw the changes you made to it.

Save a little weight Yes…and the ultimate was to give more place for engine and the 2 servo trays for 3D Vector (see picture)
>
A YOUTUBE video show a canopy collapse without the additive inlet….That why I make this modification. More ait for the BF300 is a good think.
>
Other important point, don’t forget to make a strong reinforcement at point beetween rudder and fuse (see picture with additive carbon inside) !!

Olivier - Thank you.
I will use some of your ideas.
I receuved an email from Skymaster with a notice warning not to fly the Avanti yet and wait for a rudder re enforcement update. I guess this is what they ment regarding the re enfoecement you did to the rudder.
As for the VT pipe - I hope it will do the job. I cannot upgrade it like you did, do not have the proper materials for that.
Thanks,
Ziv

Interesting enough I flew mine today at MS jet for the fourth time and my spotter said I control surfaces were fluttering. I didnt hear anything or notice it but I landed anyway and taxing in we noticed the rudder wasnt working correct. After I shut down I found a brand new BLS 172 500+ oz torque servo had two stripped metal gears in. The only thing I can think to do is go in on my servo arm but to do this I will have to cut a larger hole for the control since it will be inside the rudder. Needless to say this ended my flying at MS Jets till I can get new servo gears and figure out the issue.

My Feedback: (8)
I too received an email from SM asking me not to fly until I receive "re-enforcement parts for fin". Does anyone know what "parts" they are asking us to install? On their first addendum, they had us re-enforce rudder base around brackets and forward/aft rudder post and I laid down strips of carbon cloth inside around brackets and base of rudder. I hope they are not having us replace the brackets.....no way I can get them out now!!!
Fender,
Did you find the source of your flutter on the rudder? I did have rudder flutter before I re-enforced the front post and base of rudder with carbon cloth. If I remember correctly, didn't you install a brass bushing for the rudder pin going through the hinges or was that someone else? I am surprised the BLS-172 stripped gears. I am using them also and I am going to remove servo to check. I do have a little play in my servo linkage (4/40 ball links) and I can't tell if it is from servo, linkage or hinges.

Im curious, is the SM notification to the folks that dont have the carbon on the supports for the rudder or something else? It had to be flutter, I never heard anything or even noticed it but I have one tooth broke on two different metal gears and the only slop the rudder or any of my controls have is the slight play in the servo. I added hysol and refitted the pin for the rudder for a perfect slop free hing, im going to to change the servo arm and go down further on the arm to get more mechanic advantage to see if that helps. All in all the jet flew great the first flight had a flap setting issue, I forgot to add the flap value to the gear up condition. So I just landed without flaps, the jet doesn't need flaps to land, I was using take-off flaps and had a hard time getting it to land LOL. I didnt get to check the thrust vectoring due to the rudder servo problem, but I did find the right PSI for the main struts to get them to stay up so thats a plus! With the P200 and being 1/2 to full throttle the entire time I landed after about five minutes with just under a 1/4 fuel in the large tank, the main tank was still full since it empties last. So probably seven minutes easy per flight. My CG was perfect im about 1/4 inch from the aft limit and when inverted I barely push up, literally just one tic. The elevators were super sensitive so the I dont recommend going past book throws, but the ailerons are sluggish so I will add some throw and mix in elevators to speed it up.

Hi everybody,
for safety on the rudder, here my solution (no problem after 3 flights) :
- Reinforcement with carbon and fiber glass (see picture in my last post)
- A strong HiTech 7980 TH (35kg with 6V)
- A big horn in carbon plate 2,5mm (all the SM horn are very to small for me..)
- Linkage 3mm with an additive carbon tube 3/6mm
- Ball bearing in 3mm on each side
...but now, I wait the recommandations from SM and their upgrade ??

I thought about going with a double horn/double arm setup, this kind has me worried about the rest of the control horns since I did use the stock SM horns which I agree are to small. Has anyone talked to SM? Maybe they will chime in here and provide some info.

Hello FenderBean,
I've been watching your videos lately and I'm wondering 2 things about the SM Avanti XXL build.
1. How many hours do you think that you've been building this jet??
2. Is this a build in which you can get one servo at a time so you don't have to invest $12000+ all at once? For me, I'd want to get one thing at a time but since you are building one you would know the answer better than I.
Thanks!

I would say from start to finish it would only take a few weeks. I took breaks plus I had to wait on things to arrive to finish the build. Any project can be done one thing at a time but I would think that would end up costing more due to shipping. I always try and keep my orders down to prevent paying lots on shipping cost and normally you can save money through tower using their savings codes.
