Navy F3H Demon

I understand that the original owner had in mind to fly it with a turbine so much so that he was waiting for development of the then KJ66 turbine (vide the thread opening statement). What's going to happen now is, I believe, unknown. If I was in this kind of situation I would be very much inclined to go for a turbine in order to retain the current fuselage configuration. Presumably the author has already made his choice of propulsion by now.

The inlets measured give me 14 square inches of air intake. The nose gear opening is an additional 7 square inches until they close. Some jet guys here in Michigan say it will be enough...hope so. Anyway, my bigger concern is determining the CG . My other concern is wing incidence. When the fuse is level the wing has a 7 degree positive incidence on my trusty Robart incidence gage. I assume that I set the flying stab at 7 degree also? I guess I should build a 'hand chucker ' like those Brits do in their Traplet magazine articles ( loved Peter Nye and Chris Golds articles) They both have always been my inspiration for the 'road less taken' for jet projects.
I have attached another photo as I decal it up.

Jets, how are you determining the "level" fuse? If believe that the full scale bird had 2.5 degrees positive incidence and 2.5 degrees down thrust. This makes the thrust line 0 to the wing. Which turbine are going to use? With regard to th CG..... You can go through the gyrations of determining MAC an all or......make it about 1/2" in front of the main wheel tire! On the older jets without flight control computers, the gear method seems to work. What is your wingspan and cord?

I am going to use a KT 100 turbine for power. The enclosed photo shows how I modified the ducted fan inlet to at least point the incoming air at the turbine. I probably will grind a radius in the rear nose gear mount to smooth the flow.
Where I cut the original top of the inlet away is where I will mount a tray to hold pump, ecu and other stuff. I will angle it down a little to direct airflow toward the turbine. One of the few good things about living in Alaska south (Michigan) is our club (oh crap, I just remembered I forgot to pay my club dues, that's a $ 20 late fee), anyway, we have over 20 turbine members and these guys are always willing to give their help when I ask ( of course there are a couple who give advice when I don't ask ) but that the fun of being in a club. But the best thing is going on this forum and getting tips from anywhere in the world. Wait, do I have to pay dues here? Anyway, it's late, I'm tired and apparently a couple of RC jets, that cost over $ 20,000 dollars, crashed at Florida Jets. Apparently some hobbies are expensive and have a bit of danger involved.
"When I fished, I got a hook in my ear, when I raced my 64 GTO at the drag strip, I had clutch grenade and come out the bell housing leaving steel bits in my knee, when I was at the driving range the guy next to me....". (Fill in the blanks)

The Demon took 3rd place at Toledo, yeah! Terry Nitsch took first with his beautiful A-10 and second was by another guy in my club with a outstanding BVM Phantom. So, I was in good company.

Jack,
Thanks for taking and posting these photos from the Toledo Expo held last weekend. I judged some of these models and the craftsmanship and scale fidelity were simply outstanding. The FW-190 and F4U Corsair were over the top and won both their respective categories. Note that the Corsair is electric powered at 27 lbs. The jets were fantastic as well, with Terry's A-10, also twin EDF, plus the turbine powered Phantom and Jack's scratch built Demon. Way to go guys.

Go to : www.toledoshow-RCExpo.com and click on the Gallery for show photos. Note that the 2015 Expo photos have not yet been posted but you can view previous years winners. The 2015 photos should be posted in due time. Meanwhile, we have to settle for those that attended, took photos and cared to post them on this Forum. I thank them for their effort.
