Oo, that looked a bit scary, the wide angle lens makes it look a very long way away after it took off.

Apart from the pitch sensitivity how did it fly and what elevon and aileron rates would you reccomend. I am guessing but I would have thought that you dont need much power on once its in the air.

Hopefully not too much damage in the landing, been there and done that as well in the past on other planes. Back in the air soon.

Just about to start the wing sheeting on mine, still lots to do.

Can you get any more video next time you fly it, would love to see that.

She flyes well, just a few figure-8s on the test flight, but very controllable, cruising at 40-50% throttle, i had the recommended control-movement, but i will increase expo a lot.

The repairjob took 5 minutes, so she is ready too go again.

Will try some more video next time.

The CG is spot on the mark, but i agree, will add a few hundred grams in the nose before next flight.

Flight 2:
Much better, 200 grams extra in the nose, CG is 20-25 mm in front of Nijhuis marks on the plans.
Have expo on 30%.
Only Gopro video, but it shows a much better landing.

Its been a while now and in between flying, some building has gone on.

All of the airframe is now complete and has been glassed as well. The next stage is the primer/filler etc.

The plan is to get the basics all in place in primer only and then give it a test fly before finishing off. hopefully that means I can get it in the air before the weather turns and then do the finishing over the winter.

Final painting and fine detail will take ages, along with the door and landing lights etc. So will leave this till after the test flight.

The landing was great as well.

Interesting on the grass, was it very long? We have 140m here but I was going to fit a P100. The video of Tony's vulcan looks like it didnt use that much though.

One thing, I found was a problem with the retracts main legs not compressing and bottoming out. I had to do some own design to remodel the secondary strut to get the travel back. they work fine now. If you are interested I can ping you the drawing across. Simple mod if you have access to a lathe and barstock.

I took mine to the field on Sunday as we had a scale open day. lots of attention, now just need to get it finished.

Good motivation watching this.

The facebook link shows the flight from gras, this is 170meters, as you see i lift it slowly, so with p100 i dont think you will have any problems.

If you find a good solution on the smoke, let me know.

I have fitted powerbox 3e, i will highly recommend a gyro.

The main legs seem too work fine, different springs perhaps.

Hi,

I am procrastinating Wetherby to purchase the TN Vulcan Kit. I have built numerous small models with the last one being the TN Hurricane. The Vulcan seems like a proper project and I want to be sure I will finish it before investing a lot of money in it! Is the build difficult?
I have flown jets for about 3 years with nearly 100 flights on my SM gripen so I'm not concerned with the flying side.
Any comments appreciated.

The build is not difficult, take your time to build everything straight, its not many parts, but a lot to sand. Its always nice to see something different, not so many of these flying yet.

Hi,
I wanted a real modelling project of a scale(ish!) jet and thought the TND Vulcan looked good. This thread helped seal the deal and I received the 2 wood packs and vac set before Christmas. It has gone together well so far with very accurate laser and CNC cut parts.
I am building it with a removable nose for transport and internal access, breaking just in front of the nose leg. the nose is bayonet mounted and will be retained by the fuel probe as has been done by others. I am putting a Jetcat P100 in it.
I have a long way to go but am enjoying the build immensely. The build photos on the TND website are very useful as are the photos posted here so thanks for all of those!

Looking great already Dave. One good thing about building from scratch means you can modify it to suit your particular needs. I too would do that mod.

I know it is silly but one thing putting me off is the thought of glassing it as I have never done it before. Wouldn't want to get all that way and then ruin it by bodging up the glassing.

I too was worried about the glassing never having done it before either. i have spoken to several club members who regularly glass glider wings and claim it to be simple once you get the hang of it. i plan to glass an old wing first as practice, probably long before i have to glass the Vulcan so i can get it right first!
