Pilot Dolphin Review and Build
#301
No, I don't think its possible or advisable with the current design.
On another note......
I attended the recent Princeton B.C. Jet rally and put a bunch of flights on my KT 140 powered Dolphin. The more I fly the plane, the more I like it! It is very linear in flight, goes where you point it and does really nice loops and rolls. The plane takes off beautifully with a little flap and up elevator and lands great with flaps and crow. It is a cross between a BVM Bandit ARF and Boomerang Elan which imo are a couple of best flying sport jets out there.
Well done Pilot! In my 18 years of turbine flying, this airframe rates amongst the best.

The stabs are removable. I agree with Dean that making the rudder removable would be very difficult with the current design. In addition to everything Dean said about the flying characteristics I would like to add that this jet is also very strong and can withstand a hard landing here and there, I wish I did not know this

Has anyone been successful getting parts for the Dolphin Jet? I cracked my canopy Saturday in transport and would like to replace it. I've tried emailing Pilot but have not received a response yet. Chief does not show any parts on their website (except landing gear).

O.k. guys, please don't set me on fire, but......... has anyone looked at this jet for edf conversion? thinking shuebeler hs-94 with 22-28 lbs thrust on 14s..... could someone tell me the size of the intake and thrust tube? Also has anyone gotten a tail cone worked out for this?
and what is the cost of the gear conversion to electric?

I don't think this jet is a good candidate for EDF conversion. The air intakes are small and have lots of obstructions (bulkheads), you would have to mold special intakes, which would require structural changes. If you want, I can post some close up photos of the air intakes tomorrow.

Just spoke to Christian at Shuebeler, 100mm thrust tube will work with HS-94 HST 128mm fan, however the intake needs 86cm2 or cheater holes.......

[h=2]Pilot-RC Electric landing gear for Dolphin 78"/86"[/h]
it took half year to develop it. I had done 3000 actions test on it. the brake is strong. push the plane. the plane can go but the wheel is stopping. when the power input is low voltage, it will automatic put the landing gear down.
hope you love it.

I am assembling a turbine ready Dolphin with trainer wing for a friend. I have the CG set just shy of 1/4" ahead of the indicated CG on the wing root. Any idea if this is a good starting point or will it be too nose heavy?
Thanks in advance,
Len

My C.G. is exactly per the instructions. It is very neutral and balanced in flight. Very little pressure needs to be applied for inverted and landings are a pleasure with just a smidge of pull needed for flaring. Although you will be safe, keep in mind it is a draggy airframe and you will notice a heaviness in turns and on final for landing. If you can, bring it back to at least the forward edge of the CG.

I was thinking about a set but the current air set is working perfectly. Can't justify the expense on my existing bird but if I were to build another I would go electric. I have used
electrics on my jets for the past 4 years with 100 % success. Caveat.....I do fly exclusively off of pavement.
