Default byron f16 help

hello, I recently acquired a Byron f16 built, painted, just needed radio installed and some minor work. then I found that it is missing the rear former that goes across under the vertical fin, so the fin and the stabilizer have no support. would anyone happen to have a template so I can cut a new one ? thanks in advance lyle

Iron Bay may have parts and plans if you don't get lucky

Mine didnt have one either. Just take a piece of cardboard and keep trimming till it fits and then use as a template for the plywood.

I think the original never had that former, and perhaps later versions did. Not really sure.. but it is a very good idea to install one as the back ends were known to break off these planes.

The earlier versions didn't have that former. As Vettster stated, using a cardboard template would be your best bet.

Iron bay are kind of not really in business. they were taken over by another company who still sort of operates it. Their main business is with military contracts so they don't pay much attention to R/C customers. there are many a thread about how unhappy or how much effort it has been to get anything out of them for these models. i waited bout 2 months for a canopy for the F-16.

Watch out if you make a large (i.e. scale) cutout for the nose gear as you will have to fit a gear door to it. It created massive amounts of drag for me on mine!!

here is were there is heaps of info on the byron f-16

Thanks

When you make your former you might want to follow it down the inside of the Fuselage a little. Between the thrust tube and the fiberglass. It will look a little like a wishbone.

You want to put a little stiffness in the vertical fin so it doesn't flutter at high speed.

Happy Flying!

I made mine my self, also boxing the inside with some light ply will stiffen things up.

I flew mine with an AMT180 and p80

Great flyer but it was very heavy metal. Around 21 will no fuel.

I also added carbon fiber coth across the top of the fuse to stiffen it in the retract areas

What do you plan on for fuel?

I used 3 24oz tanks in s U shape with the bottom of the u on the top side

The rudder is a very well known week point it can flutter at speeds

I made mine more of a circle with a wedge come out into the rudder area

Hope you are not planning to use 30% fuel. Best bet is to use 5% with extra oil in it. Use ducted fan fuel if you can find it. I just bought a case of Power Master 5% ducted fan fuel. LHS ordered it for me.

If you really want to use 30%, just get a quart. That way you won't have as much left over when the motor blows up. Seriously, 5% spiked with 6oz./ gal. of castor. Messy, but the motor will stay together a lot longer, especially if you keep it under 22K rpm.

believe it or not, I have had nothing but good luck with Iron Bay. I ordered some parts for the Byron F20 which I converted to turbine.I also have some Wildcat D/F fuel...a case I think unopened. I would consider parting with some. I only have 2 DF jets left, TG Mig 29 and AD Rafeal. One trick I have done to help strengthen, stiffen and fill is to use expandable foam from your hardware store. Doesn't add a lot of weight
