New big Ripmax Xcalibur (Xcalibur+)
#326
Well, mine is almost finished and ready for maiden
I am quite happy with the outcome although I found some issues. I was looking for a large, reasonable goodlooking sportsjet which could accommodate both my 120N engine as my P160SX. I went for the Xcalibur because it breaks down in small pieces and makes owning and working on a large plane, while living in an apartment, doable.
First the good news:
Negatives:
Overall the impression is very good and I am looking forward to the maiden.
I attached some pics and will make a few more the coming days

First the good news:
- The plane looks great. I am not really a big fan of boomies, but this one is really a nice looking plane
- Overall design is very good. Lots of attention to details. Material where it needs to be but at the same time not too heavy.
- Decent quality of accessories and hardware. More than adequate to fly out of the box.
- Especially wood parts (wings, booms) are well built
- No fitting issues of pipes as reported by some. It fits tight but ok
- Weight is very good with 14.1 kg with full UAT and cg @ 195mm
Negatives:
- Quality and finishing of fiber glass parts was not great. Needed quite some fixing and painting to make it look decent
- Glueing of the formers in the fuse was a joke. The person handling the glue gun was either blind or drunk or both. Most of the glue applied was not doing anything
- Radio plates were bent like a banana
- Pushrod for aileron is not perpendicular to hinge line. When using the supplied hardware this requires the horn to deform a bit. The horn is too soft for using a ball link. Not a big issue but there are more elegant solutions
- Manual is very good, but does not show which screws/bolts go where. As there were some other screws supplied then shown in manual this was a bit puzzling
- Plane builds very tail heavy. I am using a Jetcat P160RX, which is actually lighter than P140RX (as valves and pump separated and placed forward of cg). Also the used servo’s are heavy, BLS157HV, but still having to add 380 grams of lead next to large batteries is a bit too much.
- It is difficult to find other landing gear than the one offered for this plane. The mounting points are such that basically no other set will fit. I wanted to go for electrics and was at the end forced to make some carbon adapter plates.
Overall the impression is very good and I am looking forward to the maiden.

You can add 2lb of lead to the nose and it would still be light for a 92" jet!
Trying to remember how much lead I had in the nose of my Torus-think it was 3lb and overall 37lb! Still flew well...

I do agree that the plane is very light for its size. Even with the 380 grams added the final weight is just a hair over 14kg, which is great.
Earlier I was a bit too optimistic about the fitting of the tubes. When I finally fully assembled the plane it turned out too tight in some areas and also one anti-rotation tube was not aligned. After quite some sanding it finally fitted. Obviously the planes are not test assembled before shipping.
For the rest it is ready for maiden, lets just hope that the weather improves over the weekend......
When I assembled it in my living room I realized how big it actually is.....

We have had an instance in the UK where one of my customers tank plate came unglued during negative G. his flight pattern included quite a lot of flicks and outside loops.
Looking at the plate we think its peeled off from the rear end where the strap goes around. The factory are going to install a wooden block either side of the velcro strap to tie the plate to the fuselage base and also thicken the plate to be doubly sure.
I saw a couple of smaller versions have loose plates from the factory in the early days, but they seem to have sorted that. My Plus had plenty of resin bonding the plate, but I did add hysol before painting.
Anyway, its worth a check if you like negative stuff, its a big tank with lots of weight.

Well, I've finished the build, tested all the systems on it to make sure everything is fully functioning. This is the first Jet I've ever built. I tried to keep all the installs nice and clean so it got a little crowded up front but I was able to get away with only adding about 3 oz. of lead in the nose to get a really good balance just back of the manuals recommended balance point. By just back I mean about 5mm back of the recommended spot. It should be just fine. Hopefully if the weather cooperates I'll get to put the maiden on it next weekend. Come on nicer weather!

25 Flights now and she is doing great! Great flight characteristics, excellent performance fast and slow and easy smooth landings. Here is some video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-J2...ature=youtu.be

Hi Dave, on your receiver accessory board, (the black box with six attaching screws,) do the multiplex plugs receive power from the receiver batteries
then power the receiver through JR plugs?
Thanks,
Skeet

Flew the Plus yesterday for the Maiden and 4 additional flights. It was my first jet experience. Take off to landing was very smooth with no unusual events taking place. Used only a few clicks of elevator trim at first which I then pulled some out once the tank started to empty. Ailerons only took 2 clicks of trim. I'm 5% elevator with take off flaps and 10% elevator with landing flaps. CG is 5mm back of the recommended setting via the manual and that's with only 3oz of lead in the nose, I could easily add more lead but the jet flew great as it was. Being as this is my first jet, I couldn't be happier with it. This think is smooth as silk and that is without any gyros. Thank You all for the help.

Sorry to hear about your loss Reever. What makes you think it was the receiver? Not doubting, just wondering what you came up with because I fly Futaba. Were you running Sbus servos as well?

Found this from JP this year, unfortunately its the Friday flight when the wind was strong and on our backs, but good video all the same.
JR 28x and JetCat P-140Rx power. Flights this year were kept short, so less than half a tank of fuel burnt!

Hello all
I just thought I would follow up on the post I placed a little while back now that I have a number of flights on the plane. I have to say that this plane was better thought out than most of the model jets on the market and as I fly it more and more things like the tight wing tube are not a problem any more and although they still fit tight the wings go on and off easier. Also I have to admit the recommended CG is really good. I moved it around quite a bit and found that the trims and roll coupling are least noticeable when the CG is between the suggested one and about 5mm back. Overall the plane has really grown on me and after flying most of the twin boom model jets made I still say that this is the best. A couple of weeks ago I put a Mobius on the plane and had a friend take some ground video. The results are here at this link. By the way I'm flying this with a P-120SX and the flying site location used in the video is 2800 feet above sea level. For a plane this big It quite well.

Great video with a nice 'mars' back drop! Big open spaces everywhere except UK ;-)
Good to see the Plus works so well even at 2800'
