One question and a commit. Can anyone tell me the main wing tube OD for the Dolphin and Dolphin S? I am in Asia now and want to order extra tubes to help me hold the airframe down in transport. The tube that comes with it I keep in a wing and makes it easier to assemble so I need a extra tube for transport.

Also is anyone using an aluminum sleeve to hold the servo extensions away from the thrust tubes? I found this was needed but do not hear anyone talking about this on the site.

Thanks

Hello dmattmul

Dolphin L is 37" long x 1.25" dia. x 0.040" wall thickness CF Tube.
Dolphin L is 940 mm long x 31.75 mm dia. x 1.01 mm wall thickness CF Tube.

Dolphin S is 33.875" long x 1.095" Dia x 0.040 wall thickness, the CF tube has plugs inserted into both ends to make a area for the screws to thread into, which are located approx 0.6" in from the end.
Dolphin S is 860 mm long x 27.8 mm Dia x 1.01 mm wall thickness

I used electrical-insulating fiberglass sleeving, for example look at the following:

Thanks, and agreed something is needed to insure the wiring stays within a temperature boundary. I initially used a high temp sleeve and even that showed signs of heat degradation. (Not rated as well as the web site you referenced) The product I found was similar just made of corrugated aluminum. Still very light weight. Was for automobile application.

Just for reference the tube in my Dolphin S measures slightly larger at 1.100" and 27.93 mm.

Mine is probally on the low side of the tolerance, most likely nominal is 1.102" (28 mm)

Last Fall I had a slight mishap with my Dolphin S where I scraped up the nose pretty good, enough where I had to do some fiberglass surgery.
The actual repair was the easy part, coming up with a way to to paint it is always difficult, trying to match the yellow and blend it was going to be difficult, so in the end I decided to just paint it red, I borrowed the design from the Big Dolphin.

When I was at the Toledo show this past April I stopped by the Klasskoat epoxy paint booth and I decided to give it a try so I would not have to deal with a clear coat.

This paint works great and it is easy to apply.

Here is the link if you want to check it out.

Mind if I ask what caused the mishap? I'm getting ready to maiden mine in the next week or 2.

Is FB now providing the "CF look" for all of the internal trays etc.?

It looks like you have the same paint scheme as mine...

The parts included from FB in my opinion were useless. I used your templates. Great job by the way, thanks for creating them!

Has anyone installed bearings in the wheel hub? How about updates to the anti-rotation plate for the electric brake disk? I found that the screws are not quite long enough (only two or three threads) and that there is a space between the back to the anti-rotation plate and the wheel hub, which can cause the brake to drag if one of these three screws come loose. Maiden was completed this past weekend. It flew great!! I noticed these during the post flight gear inspection.

I found the same thing. I replaced the three screws in each wheel with slightly longer screws. One of mine was also loose causing the plate to be slightly warped which was caused the brake on that side to drag. I have not maiden it yet. Hopefully in a couple of weeks. Glad to hear your's flew great. Did you use use the surface throws listed in the manual?

Yea, I used the throws that were outlined in Rich Miller's manual. I've sent FBJ a few questions about the brakes. I'll repost once I have a definitive answer.

I lost a main wheel from my large Dolphin, I ordered a new one from Catherine and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were now equipped with ball bearings.
I'm not sure if this has happened yet with the Dolphin S wheels, I hope so....

Were you satisfied with my recommended throws and C.G.?

Yes, these recommended throws were plenty. I'm thinking about putting some crow in it to help slow it down a little more, as I have a KT-160 installed. Any recommendations?

I am running around 3 mm of crow,
Did you perform the flap linkage modification?
This allows much more flap deployment.
