For those of you who love the hobby but are not as fortunate to have a nice garage or basement, where do you build your jets without having the wife get mad all the time? Wanna build my Reaction 54. Lately been buying arfs built and ready to go but wanna go back to the basic which I love. Pics pics pics

Built my first Jet ( Byron F-16 ) on the dining room table. Good light, plenty of room !!! As far as the wife problem... Ain't got one of those, got to keep the priorities straight !!! LOL

I don't have the problem you mention (my workshop is in the 2nd floor of our detached garage - by design of my wife), but I used to. I took over a spare bedroom with a "temporary" workbench that could be moved if necessary (like guests spending the night).

If you going to really *build* as in a R54 kit, then balsa dust/shavings, and various fumes are going to be an issue. I covered the furniture and floor with cheap plastic drop cloths and cleaned up as soon as possible after that part of the process. Closing the door and opening the window took care of 90% of the fume problem - painting had to be done outside...

Here in Phoenix, the garage tends to get too chilly in December-January and too hot in June-August so I build in the living room. The planes are getting bigger (the Gripen is 113" long), so I might have to get a bigger living room.

The Reaction build is a balsa dust generator. If you are going to takeover a living space in the house and build the Reaction, build yourself a dust collection system. Very easy and inexpensive to make using a cheap fan in a plywood box with an HVAC filter on top. Will definitely cut down on the balsa dust that will work it's way out of the room.

Key word = Wife. Well, I don't have a wife so I usually build my planes in the kitchen and dining rooms because lots of lights, counter/table space, and easy clean up. I do the really "dirty" work on the planes in the garage though. That's the beauty of it all. I even built the heads to my classic American muscle car in my kitchen, because.... no nagging wife. FYI - carb cleaner is great for ant control but sets off smoke detectors when used indoors.

Being in the military I move around a lot, so I cannot have a nice shop either. My solution is to use the extra room or bonus to build until they get to a point of completion then I move them to the garage. I cannot wait to have a shop not part of the house that has central heat and air! Only four more years till retirement

Amen afterburner. I've been building my Reaction in my dining room but since I never use the dining room for "dining" ... it's now an airplane room. If it wasn't winter I'd move out to the garage and build there. I've got a vacuum cleaner sitting right next to the table and every bit of dust is vacuumed up. It's about time to sand the fuselage and create some major dust so, since we've got a warmup coming (55 - 60 deg F) I'll move out to the garage this weekend and sand.

Forgot to mention - I'm not married - I can do whatever I dang well please!

Wow.. i feel sorry for some of you guys. I turned the Finished basement into an all out work shop, and have recently insulated and heated the garage for the Glassing,Sanding and Bondo/Priming. The Little Lady only pops her head in to say "looks Good!" or What color is that one going to be

The small corner in the basement was just to small. I built this 9 years ago and never looked back. What I found interesting is that I have about $8,000 in the 16x20' shop, just about what I have I one jet!

I use to live in an apartment in manhattan, & kept my jets in the spare bedroom closet. I would cover the LR table & build on that, but the problem was the time it took to put everything away & clean up. It literally took me forever to even get an ARF done, but I made it work. I would paint with automotive rattle cans in the middle of the night in the hallway..lol. Shake it in the house, crack the door to make sure the coast was clear, then efficiently spray what I needed to.. I did my F-16 a panel at a time..smh

Spare bedroom upstairs - there is a 1/4 inch clearance when I carry the F-16 out - and then a real effort to get it down 2 flights of stairs!!

Hello Mav.

I guess I asked for it. My husband is still around after 30 years and he is likely to hang around for a while yet. He is an extraordinary husband and I admire him for a lot of things and especially for having the courage to stand up for an unusual wife like me. That takes some man to do.
But sometimes I think I can hear a bit of sarcasm in his voice when he asks me how many RC-planes I got. But of course, I donīt answer questions like that.
